NEW XBOX 360 SLIM DESIGN

Attendees at Microsoft's annual E3 press conference are accustomed to flashy game announcements and big-budget trailers, but the company had a surprise in store at today's Los Angeles event. The Xbox 360 is getting a slimmer, angular new look, and an internal redesign that'll reduce noise and add much-wanted new features -- and it'll be in stores as soon as this week.

Packing a black-finished case with prominent cooling vents, the new machine -- nicknamed the Xbox "Slim" by fans -- will retail for $299, the same price as the current 120 GB Xbox 360 Elite system. It will be compatible with all Xbox 360 games and hardware, with the exception of old-style external hard drives and memory cards.

It's not any more powerful, but the redesigned 360 nevertheless addresses a number of recurring gripes with the existing design: aside from being smaller, it's quieter, includes built-in super-fast 802.11n wireless networking, and packs an internal, replaceable 250 GB hard drive.

It's also equipped with a smaller power supply, a dedicated connector for Microsoft's upcoming Kinect motion control system, and five USB ports. A matching black wireless controller will ship with the system.

Conflicting reports exist on whether the older models will remain on sale, but according to at least one specialist blog, the normally reliable Joystiq, Microsoft is indeed "no longer manufacturing the original Xbox 360 hardware in any form."

Alternatively, Microsoft is cutting prices of the existing Xbox range to $149 for the basic Arcade model, and $249 for the upgraded Elite. It's unclear whether that's a time-limited clearance offer, or if it'll be permanent -- but if you want to snag a cheap Xbox, and you're not too bothered about getting the brand-new Slim, this could be your chance.

I guess i will get this one about  months after it done came out cause whenever you get the new stuff right away there is always some new undiscovered bugs that seem to surface. really not ino shelling out more money to get a new butsoon to be broken xbox 360 but i do hope that the wifi is seriously a great thing on there. cost me 100 smacks for the one i got now. if this turns out to be  much better model then i am trading in my old one ( i got an arcade)  nd add a few more dollas and then get me the new one. BETTER be worth it and not a same xbox 360 with new paint and a smaller frame, or i am gonna smell SCAM! .

thats the reason y i wont buy a 360 and y i hate microsoft. there dirty. they know what cause  the rrod and they dont fix it. y would they fix it? it more money cause people will go out and buy a new one. I know they classic they cant fix it and what not but if a simple dude down the street can fix it y can this mulitbillionaire company do it?

I would be supprized if with this model the finally given 360 player what they wanted (fixed rrod) since the next gen is due in another 2 years or so.

3?!? Damn, that's messed up. I thought Microsoft fixed the RROD issue already? Well, with more vents and smaller power supply in the new XBox 360 Slim, maybe there will be less occurance of that? We can only  on that.

Ok, let's get this out there.

It's not like microsoft has sat there & done nothing, because they ignore the problem. They have designed 4 different boards for the 360 to try & fix this problem . When one was still failing they made another. The latest ones out before this slim, was the Jasper board. It was designed much differently than the last one & ran on a lower voltage. There was less cases of the RROD with the Jaspers, but still happened.

Microsoft lost millions of dollars because of the red ring. They understand that it is a problem & extended the warranty for three years on the 360. Free replacement.

Unlike Sony who has issues with the original PS3's overheating & getting the " yellow light of doom "  Because the were so stupid that they put the power block inside the system. Basically Sony says too bad, so sad, pay us $200 to fix it or buy a new PS3.

believe me, I can't stand Microsoft as a company. But this is onecircumstance where they are doing things right by the public. Unlike Sony who just said screw the consumers!

Must have been past 3 years, or you didn't have your original receipt. I know many people who got their system fixed/swapped & it was free

Buddy of mine bought one "officially" refurbished got rrod and they gave him a brand new box to replace it. Seems like theyre easy to work with for the most part on the issue. At least from what I have heard.

Most of my other buddies were pizzed off about it, but eventually got it back without expense.

They replaced my first one & when they sent me the new one I went & traded it in for store credit at Gamestop & payed 75 bucks to get the Elite model - It took about a week & half to send in the old one & get the new one - It was a fairly easy process for them to fix me up plus they gave me a free month of gold for the hassle

Well they did give my brother free gold memberships each time, so I guess that is sort of a plus.  Though of all three Nintendo seems to have the best customer service.

this is why i am soley against buying a new system as soon as it comes out. i do the samne for cellphones too. by the time i get mines , problem is solved.  i wait at least  months to a year after it has come out. opf people just wanna have the say ' i got mines the first day" or' I got mines rght after it came out". Weeellll, things like this happen when new hardware comes out into the consumer public. I play my 360 in moderation really.  i watch most movies eithe using the dvd or a flash card usin the usb port. 8gb baby! . as far as play games on it, i usually gt about 8 hours in a few days if not less than that. but on weekends i put in 12 hopurs if not more depending on what games i am playin and if in the mod that weekend. I think of people got their systems and went all balls out playin for 32 hours straight frsh out the box or they just play so much they kind of burn the suckers out. . thats why i regulate my xbox 360 game time for my son and daughter. cause aint no fun if i cant get on and play and i am the one that bought the thing! and now its broken? MANNNN thats War!  make em pay me back in they allowance money.  . i just hope when the new one hits that it really does solve of the issues from before and be aight. Plus i hope it really is a SLIM and not just a trim.

My first PS2 ( which I got launch day ) Lasted me 1 week. No exageration, the drive stopped reading DVD games. It will still read the blue ones, though. I had to wait for over a month to get a new one in exchange. Because of course they were impossible to find. Good thing I had some blue disc games to play...

Mmm i like people trying justify Msoft but it still not cool. Y can a guy down the street fix it and a big corporation cant? i know they say o we are trying but........ The profit must b more then the cost. I got friends that make money off of people when they buy 360's they just have them bring it to them out of the box and boom no rrod. Now i dont play 360 or would never own none but i never seen anyone bring em back saying they had rrod.

As for buying systems on lunch day i only buy nintendo. there the only one to my knowledge they dont have problems out of the gate. I don't need my house going up flames cause of a 360 (next gen 720) ps3 (ps4) over heating a setting off my smoke detector giving my dog lung caner.

anyhow i like the new design of the 360 but that wouldnt stop me from setting it in front of the metra. Its looks nice tho.

so far neither my modded box or my legit box gave me problems  cuz i got the later arcade systems that seem to work just fine so i'm a bit positive this new box may be a good thing from them learning their lesson with the arcade system. i'll get this before i get a ps3 cuz i still don't see a reason for me to go out and grab one .unless of course, someone gets around to modding it !!!

i feel ya. Thats why i take my time buying systems now. i was the main cat long before just buying systems on first day then a week later the import version also. Now im not into that anymore. too many issues. ive heard both stories on 360s n ps3s thru friends. i experienced the RROD my self and a friend of mine up the block sent his ps3 back twice. i just told em to chill and just get a new way later down the line. Cuz the first batch is usually not on point with new systems. so thats pretty much what i did with the elites i have. i rocked out my (2006) xbox 360 untill 2009 and then got the elites. No problems at all since then. A ps3 i still want. Just been lazy on gettin it. This new 360 is lookin cool but i wont get it as quick as you think or i may not get it at all. I already have 2 elites still fresh. So the next system i get is a ps3...Hopefully (just sayin by luck) they will spring a new version er update to that and then ill get it just in time for that dunno
