There is a way to play online, but unfortunately, I totally forgot how. I do know that you don't have to download a clone engine; it works with the default winmugen.

cant we just duplicate that then? Find a server to host? I just dont understand how to make the server Mugen compatable...

I wish there was someone here that was around since the release of Dos Mugen. That way they could confirm the info.
