There once was a game called Hero, a Midway project about customizable superheroes that looked incredibly promising, but was sunk when the publisher collapsed. Many of the game's developers have banded together under the name Phosphor, however, to finish what they started -- now we have Awakened.

The concept trailer is incredibly rough around the edges, but as an idea, I see a lot of good. The range of powers shown, and the potential for the game's rather depressing world, could seriously make for a brilliant title. The last part of that trailer gives a clue as to the awesome power you might be able to command, and I'm very excited about it.

Open-world superhero games are still a somewhat small niche, despite a number of high profile entries. Awakened could very possibly be one of the most open-ended and personalized experiences of the sub-genre, provided they get the money and time to truly create a polished, tight game.

I definitely wish Phosphor all the best in this endeavor, and hope it finds a decent publisher. I want this game to be very, very good.

Yesterday, many of us were jawing excitedly about Phosphor Games' potentially magnificent superhero game, Awakened. The concept trailer was pretty rough, so here's a second one. It's still in a very early, unpolished state, but it looks a lot better.

No Sigur Ros this time, unfortunately. However, it is replaced by a teleporting woman who does a series of impressively animated acrobatic jumps and also has a ninja sword. Fair trade.

Everything about this game seems to speak to me. A bleak scenario, contemporary superheroes, and tons of customization. Throw in some violence and mutants on the side, and we've got ourselves a party.

Awakened is still in need of a publisher, but hopefully the game has generated enough buzz that somebody's going to pick it up soon.
