Final Fantasy XIII
« on: March 31, 2010, 03:27:27 AM »
There is apparently no topic on this so here is one. The game has recieved a lot of hate mostly because we all like to think we know what the genre is supposed to be better than some of its very founders but hey bitching is our right i guess. Neways ive been playing the game (bout 40% done id say) and if i were to describe it shortly its the core of an rpg with no side-anything but actually fun and more challenging than the newer generation final fantasy games (not even close to the first ones for sure though). Id say the hate is from bad mouthing as once played its a great game.

So opinions and such?? As always refrain from story spoilers please.

I bought the game the day after release but haven't gotten around to actually playing it yet (been too caught up in trying out a bunch of F2P MMOs lately) I'll give my opinion once I get around to playing it.

Well me, I loved it.  Beat it back in January.  I like the system and my mains were Lightning, Sazh, and Hope as they had the best set up.  It was challenging in which is causes you to think about how to approach your battles.  I also don't like the hate that this game has been receiving, but then again Final Fantasy is one of the franchises with some of the stupidest US fans, next to Rockman, Metal Gear, Sonic, Zelda, Mario, Street Fighter, and Akumajo Dracula.

Got it when it was first released in the UK.

To begin with I really liked it, then after a few hours it just felt odd. I just have to motivation to play it, which is strange. Now I have put ~30 hours into it so you can't say I haven't given it a go.

It just feels like I'm not actually doing anything. Only controlling the party leader (and only being able to select your party at around 20 hours, so much for replay value) and having autobattle, battling feels like pressing X, then L1, then X again. Repeat until enemy is dead.

Then it's just so linear, and only opens up at around 20 hours where the story drops and the huge change from what it was previous just feels so forced. It should have been more gradual.

Now I'm not saying it's a bad game, but it seems 1 step forward and 2 steps back from previous FFs. It may be pretty (which meant that in development no time was left for anything else) but it's just lacking something. Maybe due to it all being battle, cutscene, battle, cutscene etc with nothing in between to break it up such as an explorable town.

I have no desire to replay this game at all once I've beat it. Of course the series had to evolve, it was getting stale, but this seems like a mix between FFX and FFXII and not even taking the best of both.

But just my opinion here

Now that you mention it, there were types were the story felt a little sluggish and Snow acting a little like a cool wannabe.  My fave FFs are still FF6,7, 8, 9, and 12.  I would put FF13 next to FF10.

I'd say its more of a beat em up with more of an rpg format. All you do is run around, beat up monsters, level up, then fight the boss.... yeah.... feels almost like a sequel to The Bouncer then it does Final Fantasy.

My favorites were 7 and 8. I really don't care for the medieval once upon a time type FF style games.

I like the art style of XIII, but that's about it.

Every Final Fantasy are totally different from one to another and that's one cool thing about that franchise. But never again shall we have a Final 4, 6, 7, or 10..... Graphics are one thing, but story and character developpement in Final is everything... So to my opinion, they f**ked up. Where is the fanfare music? Even Advent Children has it :)
Plus I playing God of War III and Uncharted 2 when I bought it... so yeah, I haven't finished it yet.
