can anyone recommend me a good program that converts MKV and MOV videos to AVI format? preferably freeware.

Well its not a program and has limits on the video size but media convert converts via the web.

really? wow, you can even convert videos via the web. is there anything u can't do via the web?

Well it can't convert huge videos as there is a 150MB limit. You also can't play any of the latest next-gen games on the webs.
