Only a 60 Gigabytes PS3 can play PS2 games, I dont know if a 80 Gigabytes PS3 can play them though.
And every PS3 can play PS1 games (40GB, 60GB, 80GB)

Take a look at this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3#Retail_configurations

Also all PS3 systems support PS1 games, because Sony sells a small amount of their collection of PS1 games on the PSN store. So if you want full backwards compatibility(hardware) you need to find PS3's with the CECHAxx(60GB) and CECHBxx(20GB, no chrome, no SD card slots, and no wifi) model numbers. If you don't mind waiting for updates with software PS2 compatibility look for a PS3 with the CECHExx(80GB) model number. The model numbers are on the back of a PS3 on a white sticker.

Also if you plan on using HDMI to connect to your PS3, get the cheapest cable you can. Because the signal in HDMI is digital based so it is not in a lossy wave pattern like analog. All you need worry about is that the cable is HDMI version 1.3.

better be cuz i cant stand not being able to. they just want the ps2 to sell more which is why they stopped full compatability for the ps3. in other words they were milking the ps2  for all it was worth and now since sells of the ps2 have died down a lil because of the ps3 now they are gonna release the update for full compatabilty on the less fortune 40GB and 80GB (new one) so that they can all play ps2 games. One thing i didnt know was that all ps3s can still play ps1 games which is quite cool because now i pop in ff7 and play it as well as the original alpha 3 and other titles.

My friend can only play some PSX game on PS3. PSX compatibility isn't full on the model he has.

BTW when will this BC thing take full effect? Has it already happened?

No. You need to check the model number on the back of the PS3. The backwards compatibility is built into the PS3 so I doubt that there will be such a update. If you want the BC you need to open that wallet wide open to private sellers as Sony(from what I'm willing to bet) will not support PS2 games anytime soon on the PS3 in years to come. You need to look the stuff up or you are gonna end up with even less cash.

Honestly I hate to repeat these instructions as I pointed this out before in my last post.

Yeah, I'd need proof of that too..... as far as I'm aware it's not something they can do with firmware updates, I know people can use different OS on the PS3 so in theory and emulator may work..... but Sony would juest release a firmware update that killed it anyway.

Check the wikpedia link I posted before. All information is there and so far there is no inaccuracy of the information on the page.

message detail
nah, currently no models support ps2. bsides the 80gig one the reason the bc talk has re-opened is b/c sony is thinking of how to start the ps2 downloads(like the ps1 classics) and in order to do that service they'd need a update/software emulation

and from this, they hinted at possibilities that BC may return in the form of a update."

thats coming from my wife's brother that works for "sony NA"  you can belive me if you want i just repeating what was told to me calm down lol.....  I dont see why not in the future when ps2 is gone they have a update for ps3.

Well I'm pretty sure your in-law does not know how they really do the BC. The best option is just to find a PS3 from a private seller as they removed BC for pricing reasons.

To answer your question about where to put your PS3. Do you have a dumpster by you  ?  Take that PS3 & throw it in there because that's where it belongs . Wave Goodbye & smile as the garbage men take it away .

Oh wait that wasn't what you asked about .

I don't know . I have the very first model with the bigger hard drive that was $600 & it has backwards compatability . I heard many of the newer model systems Sony took that out when they lowered the price on them .

I could care less either way . I still have a PS1 & a PS2 . It's nice to have systems from the era when sony made a good game system . I may donate my PS3 to goodwill this year , since it is so terrible it just sits in the box , anyway .
