Illegal Mugen money making?
« on: September 30, 2008, 02:14:01 PM »
I am not sure where this topic goes but is making money by selling a MUGEN game that someone put together, is it illegal? If it is then I discovered something very disheartening for MUGEN creators. :o

Well I was surfing the web and found a site that was similar to ebay, and there were users on it selling MUGEN games that they "put together and stuff collected over the years" and are making money off of other people's hardwork like characters, stages and screenpacks for $10-$20 a game and there are people who are actually buying them!

This is nothing new. And for people who arent computer savy its a lot easier to just buy a playable rom than screw around with programming. I tell people about Mugen all the time, and they lose interest as soon as they find out they got to put it together. So you cant blame people for buying it, I wouldve 2 years ago.

As far as people selling it, they probably make very little from it. I wouldnt worry about it, it truly has no effect on what we do. Just something else to stir up drama that truly isnt worth it. People sell DVD, bootleg T-shirts, and Concerts on Ebay, and everywhwere else. I buy bootleg concerts quite often. The economy in a lot of countries suck, people will sell anything to get a few extra bucks to put food on the table.

If the seller made the content then he/she can(or at least ask permission to sell the work). But he/she can't sell the mugen exe file because within the program it says it illegal to give the file after a certain year but don't worry it; you wont be sued as the company that made it does not exist anymore since 2002.

Well, what they're selling as they stated on the page are stuff like characters, stages, and screenpacks that they downloaded from mugen sites on the web and selling their "hardwork and time" of putting the characters and stages together in a "game". There were even some characters that were posted on this forum that they put in like Sandman, GhostRider, Human Torch, Silver Surfer and others.

Right we know.

MP3's cost money to buy on CD's too but everyone downloads them illegally for free, and those people actually are trying to make a living.

"MOST" of us creators have better things to do than worry about a couple of people selling Mugen on line for next to nothing. I'd rather work on more characters to give to people rather than cause pointless drama about people selling a rom, when people pass around MP3's, torrents, and everything else in Mugen left, and right which is the same thing as stealing.

For the people that paid for I hope you enjoy the characters.

Yeah there isnt enough people doing this to ruin anything....but to raise an interesting point IMT has no Google adds or a pay pal donation button....alot of other MUGEN sites do...is that wrong??? idk We have a website too not just a forum so what it comes down too is someone is paying out of thier own pocket to keep the site up

Its not much really but that depends on how many sites they own and maintain with a paid web host such as hostgator. I'm pretty sure MG and MI own their own servers.

For any other forum with banner adds, pop ups, full page ads or Paypal that's fine for them. I have nothing particularly against it. It's just not what we're about. I know how much it costs to run a server, forum, website, etc... yearly it's not that much and we just cover the bills ourselves. Right now there are two people paying the bills and I'm not one of them.

As for selling Mugen, like AlexZiq said, for some users it's easier to buy some assembled Mugen and I think most the time they probably don't know they can get it for free. I do have something personal against anyone who sells mugen, but not particularly anyone who decides to buy it, especially if they are well informed in what they're getting themselves into. Again, Infinity is all about sharing (not selling) what we make.

Ditto I agree about the bills too. I would gladly pitch in with my team to keep our site up, I dont want charity. To each their own but this is strictly a hobby for me that I get to share with some folks out in cyberspace.

One of my friends at school was trying to sell mugens for money.
I had to tell everybody that it was a freeware program and it's illegal to sell it. >_>

I make characters for all of you to enjoy . Whether that happens or not is still up in the air . But for those of you that do enjoy my characters , I'm glad & thankful . I would never try to sell one of my characters to any of you ( although people have offered through PM paypal for Medieval Spawn on youtube )   :o

I tell them wait until he's done & you'll have a complete character for free .

All my vids of any Team Spoiler character on youtube have the link where to get them ( Unless they are still WIPS ) . I am all about sharing . Not trading , selling , bartering or whatever .

But I guess I can't blame a guy for making a buck off of this . If I goto the local pool hall , there is always a guy walking in with a backpack filled with all the latest movies . Same scenario , I guess I can't blame these guys for trying to make some extra ends .

There is only one problem I could see with these people selling mugen which I hope they do what I'm thinking some people out might do, if they sell mugen and ask for credit card payments or some how use it get bank numbers then its a problem but, if they aren't using it to do that kinda stuff I don't care. That is the first thing that came to mind when I read this post, that it might be a scam to get people's personal info but, like I said as long as people aren't using mugen selling like that I don't care plus if people are too lazy to search around and download everything for free that is their own problem.

Yeah, I guess you guys are right. If people want to throw their money away for something they could get for free, its their problem. Anyways a salute  :DB: to all creators out there and I hope you guys keep on doing mugen and keep up the great work for the rest of us. :)

No one has ever offered to buy a WIP from me but you know, if I had a character with 100% original sprites with no copyrights, I might accept an offer for $10,000.00, then I'd publically release the character a week later. :-??

leave it to a noob to post a topic like like this

but aside that every 1 in the mugen community needs to get together and make there own original game
theres so much talent here and no disrespect its being wasted by making ryus and other characters im not trying to bash mugen or anything cuz i love it but if every 1 got together and made an original game and sent it to some other company i think it would be gold and theres your mugen money making :)

Oh that would be a pretty cold move , Acey .

He only offered me like $100 through paypal . Traders there a strange breed ? They would've traded around a Medieval Spawn with a walk & a stance at the time . Maybe he thought Spawn was complete or something & I was holding back .  :-??

Now on the other hand if Capcom decided to bring 2d back & offered money for Medieval Spawn . Sorry guys you would just have to play him in whatever game they would use him in  :DxDie
