The reason PS3 cant play custom music on all games

So its not that the console doesn't have the power to do it. It's really Microsofts fault.

So don't look forward to any patches utilizing a full all games custom soundtrack feature, because thanks to Microsoft, it's not going to happen.  L-)

I've been hoping they would fix this with an update ever since I got my PS3. My friend has a 360 and he can even use custom soundtracks on old Xbox games.

The only PS3 game I've seen that supports custom soundtracks was Street Fighter 4.  :(

Um.. of course they wouldn't... Microsoft is trying to promote the 360, not the PS3...

Well thats BS even tho they have a patent. All sony should have to do is make its own proprietary version that in no way uses any of MS source code. its not like just because they have a patent does not mean they cannot use anything like that.

If that were the case why are there so many types of TV's plus I personally know a guy who actually made the first baby gate. No joke on that and there are tons of different brands for baby gates. So how were they able to get around his patent?

So I think Sony is just using that so they don't have to make it. All they have to do is use completely original source code and make it to where it seems nothing like MS.

Leaving aside methods of business and most coding situations, it may not be an excuse to not do it...

Hypothetical Situation: It seems to be more than simply source code use, considering a lot of this isn't involving source code, but the processes behind the custom soundtrack.

In any case, we need to have an actual understanding of how patents work before saying that all Sony has to do is make their own.
Punctuation and capitalization can make the difference between "I helped my uncle, Jack, off a horse," and, "I helped my uncle jack off a horse."

92% of people have moved onto rap. If you're part of the 8% who thinks rap isn't music, sucks to be you.

Most newer stuff sucks, though.

Alot more  games use custom soundtracks, alot of their 1st party games do. Panzer is right, if it was THAT easy Sony would have done it. The thing is, Sony probably has its source code cause if they didn't games on the PS3 with custom wouldn't have custom soundtracks.

Yeah. I really hate microsoft because their software and hardware both suck. I don't even buy games anymore for my 360 unless its a console exclusive because I don't want my 300$ to go down the drain from some idiotic red ring. I mean hell, the original NES didn't even have a equivalent to the red ring. Part of me wants Microsoft to go out of business because of how much they fail, and part of me wants them to stay in business because if they go out of business the economy would take such a huge hit, and we don't need that.

Here's playstations forum which states which games do support custom music though.

Among the many features included in the July (08) released firmware 2.40 in-game music was one of them. However, there have been very few games to take advantage of this feature as (from what I've heard) it requires a lot of memory and has to be taken into account in the early development stages. Anyway, there are a few that have been able to squeeze it in. Here's a very incomplete list but hopefully you can contribute what info you know. Note: I marked some of them unconfirmed as I remember hearing that those games were to support the feature but due limitations of money and time I have not been able to confirm whether it's true or not. If you can help, it'll be greatly appreciated.

Ok notice that sentence I have bolded? Well the first part about memory is idiotic. 360 does it NP (If I recall I will clarify later) and I know for certain the regular Xbox did it because games like DOA Extreme beach volley ball had it. So if it was a memory issue why on earth did a previous gen console make use of it with no FPS loss or gameplay degrade at all?

About the early development part I can believe that. but it goes back to that patent if supposedly they won't do it because of MS's patent. That thread above proves wrong because those dev's that made those games have done it. So I think it could relate to  putting it in during early dev. That would make sense and why, not alot of games use it. The dev's did not think it was important in early dev and maybe almost before release they wanted to do it but scrapped it because it would not work right? Just a theory but the memory crap is bogus and so is the patent. The games  listed in that thread prove it. and by bogus on the patent I mean its not a legit reason.

I, for one, own both systems and am incredibly happy with my 360. I really only use the PS3 to play metal gear and a few other exclusives. It's not a bad system by any means, but it's no better than the 360.
