MvC Phoenix WIP first VID added
« on: May 08, 2008, 02:40:28 PM »
Hi there, since i lost Snake's sprites during a system restore i sent him to hell by the moment.
so i decided to start in something completely new to me: MvC

after see that sucha great character as Phoenix hasnt really been made (i know Jean grey char...one attack and winpose as fenix..is not a full phoenix wich u can see here:
)

i decided to take this on my hands and bring her to mugen.

she is being conceived as a boss character, due to his Hi profile. so in 2 days work i have this to show ya:

stance (need to fix boobs bounce xD  )

in place jump (elevation, due to she always floats)

move forward

move backward

in place defense (subject to change)

several moves

Dark and White Phoenix Palettes.

most of the anims has transitional frames, but since i did the gifs with FF, i removed them to just show the main actions.

Ideas, C&C are welcome as always, just one thing: yeah, i want the hair to look that way  %-(

She looks nice, apart from the hair. It seems to stick up too much me thinks, and it seems to change size in a lot of the sprites. For the feel of power, use Gills hair, as it makes her look more menacing (although this isn't dark Phoenix but oh well)
Some of the animations are a little choppy as well, but in 2 days work that's impressive.

I was about to mention the hair. ;*))

Anyways, with two days of work, that's a lot of stuff and it looks good. I'd say add shading to her cloth thing around her waist as right now it looks more like a design on her costume. All in all, looks really promising and I look forward to seeing more.

Well, maybe shade it differently? I just think it looks wonky how pointed and clumped it looks.
It's just not really Phoenix, if the hair had more fluidity and maybe a softer wave rather than spikes it would probably look better.

But hey, it's your project sugah! Everything else looks great and I know it'll come out awsome in the end! =D

Ooh! Give her High heels!!! xD

I like the looks of her.  Her hair could be played around with a little.  Also with the jump the right arm could maybe use another frame it looks like it skips from the downward position to the upward position.
I wish you the best of luck with your new wip.   ;D

It is a good start...but if you really want it to shine some work is needed. The sprites seem to lack certain shading,I can't really spot out where though  :-?? I may be wrong.

The hair needs major shading improvements,I would suggest highly editing off of Gill or Remy. The hair is also shaped oddly, like everyone else said.
The animations are choppy and don't seem to be all that fluid, but you did say it is an early start,I am sure you will improve  ;)

good luck  %%-

You should really look into the hair more. It isn't the anime style that is probably throwing people off, it's the fact it has no fluidity, and it doesn't really look like phoenix's hair....(It also changes size sometimes, like big small big small....Will look wierd going from one animation to the next)
If you WANT to keep it that way then do, but you should still think about other ways...
Hair can be a *****, believe me I know; but picture it like water, and less like groups of the same thing. Also keep in mind sometimes hair doesn't just neatly pull together.
Just try new things, thats the best way to learn in my opinion..

Wow, I think I'm the only other person who likes the hair  :(

Sure, if could be slimmed down in certain areas, but I think it's a good idea.

Anyways, glad to hear that you're undertaking such an amazing WIP. Wish you luck, and if I come up with any ideas I'll post it.

the hair doesnt look that bad but you really need to work on the sprite work, for example these animations:

look a little weird to me, also some work on the body would make her look better.

Good luck.  %%-

I don't know if you've played this game but what about some of her moves from X-Men: Next Dimension? Alot of her moves from there are pretty cool, I was just playing this actually ^_^

You might be able to find some videos of her gameplay on youtube.
If not, I can describe some to you =D

thx all for your valuable feedback ppl.
about the hair thing...I really like it that way, bc i visualized that way. needs cleaning, thou i know.
what im planning is first finish the whole spriteset and then poolish it in some spots.

the area lacking of shading is the inner part of the legs (damn inglich, las entrepiernas, pues)
but thats matter of phase of poolish.

I really like the hair style dudes, bc with Gills hair will be "Gill haired" so the same with anyone else's hair.

@Lyndii: thx for the tip, ill search some vids ;)

@worksa: i know what ya mean with the water-ish way of move, but i like the spikey look bc she will get a power aura below her (morrigan style) inducing the idea of she using her powers in full charge..like overpowered possesed....nutz @v@

but i shoud add that by making around 40 sprites in 2 days...something has to went bad. lol
i just realized yesterday that in the jump anim, some frames, the "belt"  is not completed! lol
is fixed now,thou

I really didn't want to comment on the hair, but seriously dude she looks like Goku or something.

It doesn't look like she would fit with other MVC style characters with that.

I think this character looks really amazing , besides .......

Yes I am going to say it . The hair . I don't think the sprite style of the hair matches the rest of the charcater . The animations of it , make it look strange . Her hair , is kind of like Hobgoblin's cape .  I did the same with the cape , just kind of made the ends of the ripped cape move around erractically . It doesn't look right on screen , I see that now .

If you are really happy with the hair style & are going to stick with it . You may want to make the complete strands blow around . Move the starnd little by little in each sprite & it wil give it a more " fluent " look . Then when she gets mad crazy with her power , make it fly around wildly .

Hope this suggestion helps

Finally, a serious attempt at Phoenix. Good luck with her! Oh, and a Dark Phoenix mode would certainly be cool.

BTW, this whole hair drama is rather amusing. If nothing else, I'll be checking in on this thread just to see how that develops  :)

The hair will probably remain the same, I don't know many spriters that are willing to fix their own work, after they have made alot of the sprites. Everyone is too lazy, or doesn't have the time =P

I must be the rare exception to this . I had alot of Medieval Spawn sprites done . I am now redoing all of them because I redesigned the spikes , skulls & some other stuff . Believe me it was a pain lining those spikes up when he moved the first time . Since the spikes are designed different I have to line them all up again . The way I look at it is this ..... We take all this time spriting a character , why not go the extra mile ? What's another 24 hours or even week of work if it will drastically improves the way the character looks . that's why I'm redoing stuff on all of Medieval Spawn's sprites . Maybe I'm the only one that thinks this way  :-??

I like the basic build, but before you get to much further, you should give some real thought to making her arms a little more mobile. I think I see what you were going for with that posture, but she looks really stiff as it stands.

I would suggest a little horizontal movement on them during her regular stance, and more vertical movement during her jumps.

Of course, you could have that as the next item on your agenda already, in which case, I'm just pissin' in the wind.

after seeing the video, i think the stance needs some work.
The face moves up and down during the stance and it looks strange, and the breasts move in the same unnatural manner.
I reccomend what god_king and TALBAIN are saying as far as adding more movement to the stance.
In any case, she looks to be coming along nicely besides the usual little nitpicks. What types of special moves are on your mind?

Great Phoenix..  For a super move you should have her use the encram crystal and have a hugen phoenix surround her with a semi transparent solar system for overlapping the animation..  When she ses the crystal boom the solar system is destroyed lol...  As far as the hair... I love the big hair and the concept of it...  You just need to make it move more in some pictures half her hair moves as one and it makes it look like the back of her head is growning and shrinking..  I think that her hair is great.. but the strands should not move all together.. here is my example of what im sayin...

Your Phoenix could be a great and awsome character that everyone will want years from now..  Or it can be hella crappy like the first jubilee that came out...  Just take the time and it could be a super wip..

Hey dark how many different stances and changes have I given my wip lol..  (trust me your not the only one XD)

You have a point dwe/esn

Anyway back to the topic . I think when phoenix crouches her arms should come down also . You just have her upper body in the same position as the stance . Believe me a few extra frames of animation go a long way .
