between this, the new KOF, samurai showdown, soul calibur and tekken games, street fighter making a comeback, and some of the japanese fighters from SNK and arc being ported to the PS2, this very well may be the time that fighting games make a prominent return. Yet all I seem to see around here is the fans themselves shitting on it all.

did we do this when mortal kombat integrated a weapons system and 3d combat? did we do this when nintendo released killer instinct? did we do this when we heard that solid snake would be beating the crap out of donkey kong? did we do this when street fighter introduced super moves? did we do this when the X-Men got their own fighting game?

seriously guys, lighten up and go with the flow.

Amen :)

I love that comic  ;D

Anyway I did that when Mortal Kombat went 3d . I hated it . But MK 4 had sybzero doing his long absent fatality of ripping  out the spine which made me somewhat happy .

I think this new MK vs DC will be great . I am going to miss the fatalities , though  :(

To me MK4 was the best thing that happened since MK2.

The graphics were awesome, the gameplay stayed perfect. The weapons and throwable items were cool and new. The characters looked better because now instead of characters using the same sprites, most characters had different character models. The new characters were pretty cool (except jarek), The game also had Rayden, which went missing in MK3, and it had new likeable villains, instead of rehashing Shao Kahn again. They even had anamalities, which I'm kind of surprised why they don't do that anymore.

My favorite MK games would have to be

MK:A (to me this just has everything, graphics, characters, create-a-character... Everything)
MK4:Gold (Reasons I already explained),
MK:SM (I know it's a spin off game, but I loved it and want more!)
MK2 (new characters and old, the only downpoints were no Sonya and Kano)
MK3:Ultimate (A major downpoint to me was the still loss of Rayden)
MK1 (this game will always have a place in my heart because it was one of the first games I ever played)
MK3 (the original MK3 was awful because it had a bunch of new crappy characters, didn't have a masked sub-zero, rehashed Shao Kahn, and no Scorpion even)

Yeah I complained when they took Subzero's mask off for MK3 also . I still have to say my favorite was MK 1 . I got Mame running on my Xbox just so I could play it again . It was original to me at the time . The digitalized characters , blood splattering like mad , the pit OMG the pit . Of course the fatalities . Everyone single one looked different , not just an explosion with bones & intestines flying everywhere  like they did with MK2 & Mk3  etc.... When you ripped out Liu Kang's Spine in MK 1 , you could actually  see the pain on his face . That was quality entertainment in my humble opinion . Yeah I know it really had no combos or anything . but some glitches existed that we turned into combos

Noob Saibot exists in MK2
and it says in Sub-zero's ending
so the MK2 Sub-zero is the younger bro. (and so on)

Masked Sub-Zero came back mearly as novelty because of the huge change in Sub-Zero's Fighting style in MK3
Masked Sub-Zero has all of MK2 Sub-Zero's Moves, AND Noob Saibot is in MK3/UMK3
soo...yeah
it's still Younger Subby....

Ehem! noob saibot is not in mk3 or umk3 in arcades but is in console version of umk3. Anyways there are two trust me on this one and ed boon and them brought older sub masked just for more chars for trilogy becuase he died early on by someone cant remeber who. So younger brother with no masked joined mk3 becuase older one died.  Anyways i hope more info on this mk vc dc comes up becuase i wanna know more ;*))

dude.. older sub-zero went kaput, then was incarnated (or w/e) as Noob Saibot..

Younger bro without mask eventually got a new outfit with a mask.. and then started chasing after his long dead brother Noob Saibot to free him from his prison.

isn't it just a safe bet to say that midway had no idea what they were doing when they made all these characters, and are only now starting to go back and retcon the earlier games like mad so that everyone makes sense?

also, UMK3 and MK trilogy weren't cannonacal parts of the MK mythos, and were more like fan service games, so it's entirely possible to have two of the same guy in different outfits.

Actually I thought the reason why they brought masked Sub-Zero was because people missed his movelist. I thought that was the same reason why they brought back Mileena and Scorpion too. Also if the game wasn't canon, Ermac's storyline would have probably started at MK:D instead.

I'm almost POSITIVE (in fact I am willing to bet my mother's life on it) that when they think these characters up, they just grab a concept, and try to think of where to stick it in the MK mythos to make it make sense.

MKII
"You know what would be cool? lets make a guy who's completely made of shadows."
"That's a pretty nifty secret character, man! give him scorpion's moves and let's call it a day."

UMK3
"Okay man, people really think that shadow guy is cool. lets make him playable."
"Ok, give him some moves, and just make up something cryptic for a storyline to tide people over."
"Don't you mean KRYPTIC, sir?"

MK:D
"So this guy was spying on Shao Kahn, right? But now Shao Kahn's a chump. So why is he still fighting?"
"Uh.... HE'S THE ORIGINAL SUB ZERO!"
"How the hell are we going to get THAT to make sense?"

MK:A
"OKAY! We managed to KIND OF explain how Noob Saibot could be the same person as Sub Zero, but man, it wasn't easy. We had to sacrafice Smoke to do it though..."
"Great, now do that for every other MK character EVER and we got a game!"
