Transformers: War for Cybertron
« on: June 27, 2010, 11:07:16 PM »
Does anybody else have this game yet? I have to say, its a really good game, but its not perfect. The friend ai is ridiculously weak. I'm stuck at this part where I have to protect Ratchet from oncoming waves of enemies, and my ally ai's are doing absolutely nothing to fight them which is really dumb because I run out of health and ammo rather quickly (I'm playing on medium difficulty). The textures sometimes take a good time to load (5-10 seconds). Also the game has frozen on me a few times. Once during saving a checkpoint (but the save wasn't corrupted so I was okay), and once after a boss fight (I had to redo half the boss fight over again). Also I glitched in a elevator which denied me to move anywhere so I loaded to last checkpoint, however the checkpoint was right after the elevator part, so I was safe.

Aside from those nitpicks though, I really enjoy the game. There's a lot of nostalgia 80's campiness in the converstations between the autobots and decepticons. So far, it is the best TF game made. I'd have to give it a 8/10. The reason its not a 10 is because of my nitpicks. I'm planning on collecting the figurines of Optimus and Bumblee based off the game, their transformations look more like cybertronian vehicles because the game takes place before the tv series. All in all, its a solid Transformers shooter and any die-hard fan should get a kick out of it.

Personally, i expected better. Now, don't get me wrong... there's alot i enjoy about the game:

1. The characters new designs are cool (especially Ironhide, Soundwave and Bumblebee). They added just the right touch of G1 earth to them but still they come across as Cybertronian.

2. Graphics: Cybertron itself is amazingly beautiful and active.

3. Gameplay is surprisingly entertaining and fun.

4. And the banter is top notch, this alone maybe it's biggest selling point... Universal Greeting ftw.

But... there are alot of things i just couldn't ignore:

1. It was said that this game would be based on G1 (before the journey to Earth and this would be canon) but there's alot of wholes in this story. The way Optimus receives the Matrix, Tripticon still being modeled after a dinosaur, The Arielbots (Air Raid and Silverbolt being playable and in story)... What the HE*L!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Sideswipe playable (YES!) but where is his egotistical twin Sunstreaker (One of my favs). I didn't like when Michael Bay left him out of the ROTF movie and i don't like that there being split up again here. There the original twins!

3. Glitch factory anyone... Now why does this game have so many gliches... come on, This is the Transformers game weve been waiting for / for over 20 years. How many times does Laserbeak get stuck on your game and where is Ravage?

4. Luv the shooting / switching of guns aspect of the game but that melee system has to be one of the worst.
Every Bot has some sort of stupid club or axe and no throws.

5. Customize your Bot or Con... REALLY! There isn't much customizing anything here. Limited everything. I thought i'd be able to place different parts on the models, change to any colors i wished or maybe even change factions and transformations. Disappointing...

6. And maybe the biggest problem of all... Multiplayer and Escalation modes are just freakin awesome (ONLINE)?? You can't even access these modes without being connected. I thought that these modes would be alot like the modes in Star Wars Battlefront 2 but much better (they're better, but only ONLINE). For $60 bucks, i should have the choice of playing alone, with a friend at home or online. It really leaves you with nothing to do after you've beatin campaign mode?? What happens in acouple of years when a new title comes along with better online multiplayer and no one logs on to play these... your left with useless modes (COME ON GUYS!)

All and all... (Yes!) this is the best Transformers game ever made but... when you think about it, thats not that hard to be. I hope to God they release some patches as DLC to fix many of these problems because this could be a really great game. I'd give it a 7.5/10.

thats funny i kinda agree with most of what you listed. Im a huge G1 TF fan so this game is a pretty smooth treat. again like u said i did expect more. but its a treat for an old fan like me. I just wish u didnt run outta ammo so quick lol and have to really hold out swingin till ya got some. I hope theres DLC later for the G1 skin mappings like with the TF 2 mike bay game. now that would really do it for me  Other than that its  great lookin game
Lots and lots of supers so f*ckin what

I myself have the game ( PC ) and I love it I have only don't the Con side of the Story like as I love Bad Guys and well yes the Game does lack Mods or any way of changing the Bots weapons armor inc..but that is the point they cant so why should we and yes its sad that they have left out A LOT of the old Fav's but this is before the Cartoon and even the films.

As for bugs yes you will find them/get them I found a ton of them on one level..( the one where you Fight Alpha Not going to say much I don't want to give the game away ) however all in all its a Good Game

The Game is based on the Unreal system and from a Modders point it may be moddable with the right tools I know that Gears of war was modded to hell and back and so is Splinter cell ( the new one ) along with Unreal ( the game ) has tools to help gamers make maps and mods..give it time and there will be mods and who knows what.

But my person take on the Game is its a Family Game its one that the kids can play and mum/mom and Dad wont get all upperty about...

8.5 out of 10
U is a letter NOT as Word....

I totally agree with what your saying, but I stand by my 8/10. Reason is, Batman last year got a lot of 9's and I don't think it really deserved it. Sure, it was a solid game but the boss fights were crap. Almost all the boss fights in that game were attack thugs, then attack the boss while he/she can't do anything, something is clearly wrong when you get more excitement from attacking the thugs then attacking the bosses!

Aside from that Arkham Asylum had no multiplayer, usually games like these make up for that with extra un-lockable content for the main game, but it didn't have any of that either (unless you count that pointless dialogue left by the Riddler). A lot of people say Arkham Asylum is the best comic based game ever made, I disagree. I think the first PS1 Spidey game still wins in that section. Spider-Man on PS1 had better boss fights, and a bunch of costumes to unlock. In TFW4C the boss fights clearly outrank and outclass Arkham Asylums boss fights.

That said, TFW4C still needs work before it can get a 9 or a 10, however I doubt customization will ever get anywhere near as close as something on the scale of Armored core.

Seems we have alot in common, i loved Spiderman and Spiderman 2: Enter Electro for the (PS1)... i actually still own them. As for Batman: Arkham Asylum, I thought it was a pretty good (DC) based game but your right... it didn't deserve a bunch of 9's out of 10 (maybe a 8). My favorite comic based games are actually:

1. The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction (GameCube)
2. Spiderman 2 The Movie Game (GameCube)
3. Marvel Ultimate Alliance: Special Gold Edition (X-Box 360)
4. Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age Of Heroes (Dreamcast)
5. X-men: Children Of The Atom (Saturn)

Now Transformers... I've ate, slept and breathed the formers since i was a small child and as fun as this game maybe... i can't help but wan't more out of this title. Hasbro has had terrible luck in the game franchise department concerning there biggest cartoon/toyline money makers (G.I.Joe and The Transformers) for far too long. A G.I.Joe game should have the same type of look and feel as a Call Of Duty, a Metal Gear Solid or a Splinter Cell game... while a Transformers game should have the customization of a Armored Core game (like you said), A fully explorable world like Grand Theft Auto (Just mechanized) and alot of attension on character development (such as there own weapons, melee and throw attack upgrades in story and multiplayer modes). Reading acouple of comics and watching a few episodes of the original series wouldn't hurt the development teams either (for accurate information and future story telling... canon). With the tech that we have today... this shouldn't be that difficult for a true (Hasbro) transformer fan.

Oh! by the way... Ken Masters is my favorite Streetfighter too.

Your gripes about Batman are purely preferential. Multiplayer or added content are not necessities they are addons (unless your core component is multiplayer I.e. Street fighter). The presentation was top notch. The combat was fluid and responsive. They nailed the predatory element of the game. The faithfulness to the tone of source material was spot on. The boss fights were done quite well in my opinion. Adding the thugs simply made for a more interesting fight otherwise if each fight was one on one you would simply just roll, counter, combo, repeat. For 15 minutes. Instead you had to micromanage as well as use different aspects of combat to overcome your opponents. Even the miniboss Titan waves had you constantly moving and thinking switching up your patterns. It was easily the best licensed game period not just comic. Spiderman ps1 was great though I will give you that but there are still a few ahead of it ( hulk ultimate destruction comes to mind).

The presentation was fine. The gameplay was solid, but I wanted a real reason to play it more than once. The best analogy I could describe for Arkham Asylum though is a roller coaster. It has its high points (The epic stealth thug fights and the voice acting), and then it had its low points (the bosses hiding behind thugs until they couldn't attack you) and then its over. All I wanted outside of fighting thugs was a few good fist fights with the super villains sort of like the bosses in Metal Gear Solid but it seems that was too much to ask... Idk. I guess I've just been spoiled by good boss fights so much that it makes me dislike the cowardice bosses in B:AA

I haven't tried out Hulk Ultimate Destruction, but I played the demo and it was awesome, I also haven't tried out the Marvel rpg's that much either and I just got MUA2 yesterday since the dlc is being rereleased (and after looking at the pretty big roster) and I'm lovin it. Also picked up X-Men Legends earlier.

I'm really hoping Arkham Asylum 2 is better in the boss fights department. I swear, if I have to ice skate while fighting Freezes thugs only to wait until Freeze is vulnerable to attack....

The marvel rpgs are  must if you havent tried them do it. And try all of them each are unique from each other. Its kind of funny you mention Metal Gear Solid Because me and alot of my friend refer to the game as Metal Gear Batman. Similar bosses in even a similar order.
