I really really really hate the economy now.
« on: June 16, 2009, 11:57:14 AM »
2 days ago I applied for a job at K-Mart, and today I just got a voicemail saying it's canceled because I don't have 6 months experience. I just woke up and right now this is how my days going so far.  >:(

I can't get experience if I can't get a job, and I can't get a job if I don't have experience.

This isn't the USA that it was 10-20 years ago. This is no longer the land of opportunity. Now it's the land of if you have experience. If things keep up the way they are going, we're going to have another depression.

I really need a job sooner or later because if my mom dies soon (god forbid) I'm going to be pretty homeless.

Dude its already in the beginning stages of a depression. But I feel your pain this is the 4th day in a row im not working. Ive been working with a temp agency and yesterday and today they sent out people on repeat tickets(by request of the foreman of the jobs they were on). But Yesterday they sent out 0 new tickets. Today they sent out 2 thats right a whooping 2!!!

Normally at 5:30 am in the morning there are 30 people sitting outside the agency. By 6:00 am there are around 50-70 people. Everyday the most that go out are 15 people. Some days im in that 15 people somedays im with the rest that are walking home pissed off.

But the only cool thing about that is when I actually work  a day with them, that same day I get off of work I give the person in the office the ticket and they give me a check. So for every day I work I get paid that very same day.

Thank you. I applied for like 5 jobs and that's the same thing I got back, " U don't have enough experience." After the 3rd time I felt like saying "how the F%*k am I supposed to get experience if no one would hire me."  \-/o

these days if you dont know somebody you will get nothing and thats why my family and i decided to make a family business. so that way we all will have a job. that what you speak of is just how jobs are. they try to save themselves money by not hiring. my advise is dont give up on finding one and try looking into a trade or something you do for yourself so that if you are in a pinch you can always have something you can fall back on. theres not too much you realyl do except try and try again

I can't get experience if I can't get a job, and I can't get a job if I don't have experience.

It's so true, but it's not new, this has always been the case. Go watch "The Secret of my Success" from the 1980s with Michael J. Fox. The problem is that unemployment continues to rise but it's also being compared to the 1990's nad early 21st centry which was just spectacular.

Regarding K-Mart, they give employee benefits which is why they want a "better" grade of worker. I remember how pissed I was when Toys "R" Us didn't hire me after giving me a personality test... Try the fast food joints again.  :-??

(I started in fast food, there's nothing wrong with that as long as you can find a job, I worked in Temp jobs too, 4 days downtime is nothing, try 2 weeks. Just don't give up.)

That whole "you need experience" thing always pissed me off when I first started looking for a job.

But what sucks worse is what I run into now: "You're overqualified for this position", "We're really looking for someone who just finished school", or my favorite "Well, you have a degree, so we're worried that you probably won't stay here for long".

But then everything else that would pay me enough to keep my bills paid requires a Masters or phD.

This economy bites. I'm working right now, but I can't say for how long. I'm in a luxury industry, so my company is on it's knees. I'm really not looking forward to trying to find another job again...

If the benefit thing is truth, try applying for part time. They don't give part timers benefits anyway, and then you'd be able to get your six months experience. After a three month probationary period you can usually move to full time anyway.

Lying about your previous experience usually works too with retail jobs. They usually don't even bother checking, as long as there's something on the application. Make up a fake mom and pop grocery store or something and tell them that you have been working there for about a year, and are now looking for something a little more solid.

true they ask for experience, probably in all the world. Here in spain it´s all the same, thanks i have some experience in office jobs but that doesn´t solves the problem as the job loss rates here are huge...

It´s a worldwide recession.

Heck people with jobs are feeling the sting as well. With my job letting people go means we gotta double up on our work while doing less hours. Plus I got a few jerks there F*&kin' wit people trying to get them fired. Stuff like that ain't right. But everyone here out of work I've already been in your shoes man. This is my first real job in years. After I got out of the service in 2003, I didn't find work til 2005. Man I spent 2004 and a portion of 2005 homeless because I couldn't find work. I mean I could go fight a war, but I can't get a job, WTF?! Hey VKM, I hope for the best for your mother man. I hope she gets better...

well i know hopw all of yall feel. i have had up and downs for years with jobs. one year working, 5 months down time, 2 years working, 1 year downtime. one thing i have found out over the years is you have to have a skill that you can make some off the books money. landscaping or doing some handy work for a few bucks here and there. ads up then next thing you know turns into a regular gig. I am a supervisor at a major power station. utility companies like electric, water, damn even cable dont get hit too hard by the economy that bad so if you can get a job with one of those then stick with it. trust me for the almost 3 years i been working and earning good money is a great feeling but when your work starts to slack and then downtime starts you got to have a backup. like the other guy said, start ya own business doing something that doesnt require alot of start up capital. do oniline pay surveys, heck do something! fast food, waiter, floor buffer, janitor anything! yeah all that your over qualified or not enough experience talk is just them not wanting to hire you and they need an excuse not to. how you gonna be overqualified for a job that you need? if thats the case alot of people may be over qualified to work at mcdonalds and have masters degrees. best bet. go to classes or school for jobs that wont run out of work like that. that always needs bodies to fill positions so they stay in business. and dont turn your nose to jobs you think you too good for cause you might find yourself needin that job one day. some people wanna make the big bucks right off the gate but it dont work like that in tha real world. everybody starts somewhere and unless you got great connects then its at the bottom.i startted at the low and now i am at the medium in my field, cause i worked, didnt turn my nose from dirty hard work and came to work on time and showed up to work and not be lazy.now i am the boss of my own shift and i call the shots! lazy as i wanna be. lol. keep ya heads up tho peeps, there is always someone hiring , apply where you would not normally go and see what happens. even janitors and trash men get paid!!!! trust me , they do, i should know.

thats 1 good thing about mugen it does not  cost anything  and if  u want your  fav fighting game input the char and stages and you are  ready

Yea man no offense but if the conversation is just slated around the real world please don't mix fantasy or games with it. Keep the topic on the real world and topic at hand. That whole post was 99% spam besides one word "Cost". Now im not trying to mini mod but people are sharing stories and looking for tips and it will piss everyone off if you come in and talk about something that is not serious. It just ticks people off because they are sharing there hardships and  someone comes in an say "well the good thing about "X" here is that "Y" here is different then "X" here.

ON topic : Yea ive now been off of work since Monday.. I don't for see me working at all this week because of all the raining. With the construction biz weather is a key factor until it dissipates. Now when the rain is gone it will give all of us at Labor Finders tons more work because most of the jobs that come in are general cleanup. So that means taking a broom and pushing the water out the door for 8 hours straight. So if this storm/rain fall blows over I should have steady work for atleast a week. Only good thing that comes out of the rain.  Well that is if you get on a job that the building is atleast 50% of the way build so they want all the water/dirt/mud/trash out of the building.

Well plus most jobs are outside so you usually clean up all the trash the skilled labors leave behind. Ive picked up anything you can think of. Like toilot paper, Empty cans, Banana Pealings, you name it ive picked it up. So basically 95% of the people at this agency are outside janitors most of the time. The other time we are moving 100 + pounds of Materials for the skilled people to add to the building.

you need to work for FREE to get experience.

ANYONE will take you on and give you a letter of recommendation, you need to show an employer you are keen to learn and that you are capeable of working hard.

About 1-2 weeks work experience is enough.

USA would be feeling the recession the hardest, but if you think positive, set your self goals and give your best 100% 24/7 then you will succeed.
