The same reason they made Blue Beetle (Latino), Firestorm (Black), The new Atom (Asian) Manhunter, and Question (now Females)

Most Comic fans these days range from 24-50 in age. Theyre hoping a more diverse character base will help attract new readers.

Thats reason in part for Justice League having 4 black members, and 4-5 women in the core 13 members.

Eh youd be surprised, Neil Gaimans Sandman amongst others attracted a lot of female readers to DC that were Lesbian, or Bi. Theres even a Documentary called "Fangirls" that interviews a lot of Bi, and Lesbian women that read comics. Its not a huge number, but theres not a huge number of people that read Comics in general anymore.
