They should have had a great granddaughter and make her look more like April from the 80's series imo.
I stopped watching the new TMNT after they made Shredder a Utrom. I was like

I gotta admit though, no one saw that coming, because it follows more of the comic than the old animated series. In the comics, shredder was killed in issue 3 (rooftop battle, died in an explosion), was brought back to life using cloning worms, was decapitated by Leo, was resurrected again by a Foot mystic (the worms, not the body), inhabited a shark's body.

The battle, the worms, and the decapitation happened in the 2003 series, but the Utrom Shredder is not the REAL shredder, although he is the shredder they face during most of the show.

If you happen to watch the rest of the Ninja Tribunal story-arc, the Real Shredder does come out, and everything then makes sense.

Then there's the Shredder we know as the Utrom who took the name.

The Utrom Shredder is the one the turtles have been fighting since season 1.
