5 reasons why you buy a game and also keep it.
« on: October 10, 2014, 06:40:36 PM »
Hello fellow mugen and game players. Not too sure if this has been asked around before but I would love to know this. This is basically game only related.  When you are going to buy a game, what do you use to base your purchase on other than the experience of playing it? And if you have played it what makes you keep on playing it after you have beaten it?
For myself it does depend on the game type as well as others do too. But this is for any type. Fighters , platformers, action/adventure and so on. If you want to give name of a game for an extra example reason that is all good too. I will just be specific to the base scale I use for my game library.

Example for myself. ( using fighting game types )

1. Replay value :  most will gauge this after they play the game but I try to determine kt a little ahead. I dont like to put down 60 bucks for a game I am only gonna want to playthrough once. So fighters are not mostly catagorized in this for me till afterwards and used everyone. I still play Asuras Wrath cause I enjoy going back ocer and playing out the scenes.

2. Graphics: I love gorgeous graphics in games. Wether 2d or 3d. Pulls me in with the eye candy but this still goes same with gameplay. I dont like a sucky gameplay with nice good graphics. Blows the whole thing.

3. Gameplay : naturally cause if the controls sucks and gameplay is ehhhh lame then its goimg back to the store as a trade in.
This also points to movesets . In any game I play I enjoy awesome movessets. In action adventure games I like to see good moves used and the more I have access to then the more I am tuned in. Same is with fighting games. I like dramatics,  and depends on characters style  of fighting I enjoy them if they are technical types weighed against how easy of use.
4. Sound:  the sounds of the game fro  actual noises to the music play a part in my feel of the game. Good music pumps me up to the atmosphere of the games  gameplay, graphics and even story if there is a good one involved.

5. Story: for me in fighting games it depends some arent super mandatory especially if its a new game. But once you get to a next installement and driving more a plot then I am more tuned in to the games story behind it moreso.  But with any game especially with fightimg games, I do like to know why the characters are fighting for their reasons

Ok small explanation of my own tastes but its not required to post reasons like I did. But def list your top 5 reasons of purchasing a game and what keep you actually keeping it. I know with replay value its a rough deal since most games you dont know if it has it for you before hand. But for me it means a lot so its at my top like reasons to keep and as well buy sometimes. I knew I was gonna keep sf x tekken for replay purposes before buying it..  :P.  Hope to hear your reasons and thoughts fellow friends.

This is merely to see how people gauge said overall factor wether before hand or and afterwards.  Rank your thoughts on what brings you to your conclusion. I got ya tho bro electro.

For me its graphics, sometimes its playability, things like god of war is for mine is "keep-worthy" due to the graphics, other things like mk9 i kepts coz of the playability, can just pick up a play with you mates, and has all your favorites, depends what your into, Lego marvel os also a great game, and keeps the kids occupied, (and me most days, collecting random gold bricks)

Ooooh, good topic. I was going to give replay value as a item on my list, but technically the question is asking what gives games replay value for them. Also, I only buy a game if I think it will have replay value.
In no particular order, this is what brings me back to playing a game:

1. Fun and addictive gameplay. Pretty much a no brainer. It has to be fun, well crafted gameplay. That's the sole reason why we play!

2. Good controls. The game has to control well, else, no amount of graphics, story, etc. can compensate for that. If I can't control my character well, I'm not gonna want to play it again.

3. An authentic, unified presentation - One of the reasons games like SF2 or Doom or Super Mario 3 or other classic games are so iconic I believe is because those games present to the gamer an authentic world they've created. The art style (graphics), music, sound effects, the character/level design; all of it is well crafted to feel like it's own unique world for the gamer to revisit. Rather than a mediocre design that feels like they were going through the motions and didn't go the full extent of creating a real new universe to present to us. And not every well crafted world is for everyone. We all have different tastes.

4. The right amount of challenge. The game has to always present a good level of challenge for me to want to return and try to beat it again. As long as it's not ridiculously impossible to progress in the game.

5. The element of surprise - A good example of what I mean are the early first person shooters. The enemy movement IMO were more chaotic and random, thus you can't always predict their every move. To me, a bit of randomness in the gameplay makes the world I'm playing in feel more real. Other characters behavior shouldn't be 100% predictable like a machine. I love the old Tomb Raider games, because I could never predict exactly when certain animals were going to jump out and attack me. Their movement was sort of chaotic.

-The Graphics
-Fun factor
-Challenge
-Non linear (which makes the replay value high for me)
-Great solid controls. easy to play

Two huge examples of that for me are:

Castlevania SOTN

&

Fallout 3

The top two examples of games that i keep. Those are my kind of taste in keepers ;)
Lots and lots of supers so f*ckin what

HAIL CROM!!
