Blade Buster and Super Bat Puncher, NES Homebrew games
« on: July 17, 2011, 02:42:18 AM »
Alright, so you kids think the NES was one of the best consoles ever, huh?  I agree it was capable of some pretty cool things despite it's time, and these lame attempts to 'recapture' it's magic using super computers and drag-n-drop game makers are just, well, lame.  Let some truly dedicated folks show you how it's done; by making these games on actual NES/Famicom hardware.  That's right, some really rad dudes took the time to study up on the 6502 assembly language, and have produced some truly beautiful, and impressive, games.

First game is  "Blade Buster", a Vertical Shmup from by HLC! Project, Japan.  In this, the main goal is to score as many points as possible within the 2 and 5 minute limits, assuming you don't die.  You can also complete the stage before the time elapses, and the leftover time will be given to you as points.  Short, but fun, and unbelievably impressive for a machine from 1983.

Second game is Super Bat Puncher, a platformer/adventure/puzzle or whatever it might be game, by Morphcat Games, Germany.  While it is currently a Demo version, it certainly gives you a fair taste of the upcoming game.  In this, you go around punching bats and try to re-summon the guardian spirits that once inhabited this dungeon, by defeating each level and their boss, both of which are a mass of enemies.  It's so well made and the physics feel so complete, one could swear it was an abandoned prototype.  Demo includes 2 stages and a bonus hidden stage, which is tough.

Well, what are you waiting for?  Go on, try these amazing, less-than-400 KB games!  At least the people put real effort into these games.

Yessir.  That means you can take these ROMs to NESReproductions and play them on your trusty old NES.  Not to mention that as far as NES homebrews are concerned, these games are professionally made.  Most other homebrews are, no offense, kinda lame, but it's justified due to the sheer difficulty of the platform; that explains why you see more homebrew and hacks for the SNES and later consoles.

Definitely better, and more efficient, than the retro games you see on XBLA that require Pentium 5 processors to run, despite the emulated system being roughly more complex than a TI calculator.

There's a good number of homebrew NES games, but a vast majority of them are rather average at best.  You really can't make anything "retro" for an older console, since the technology itself is old, so making a game for the NES automatically qualifies as retro.  It's a difficult concept to define, but yeah, I prefer homebrews.  Nothing beats pluging a gray cart in a white console, then blowing the pins clean so that it will work.  I'm so glad for these people.

haha yeh thats what i mean. Nothing up to date looking as far as even that "shank" game goes even though its flash. i mean using 8 bit or 16 bit software and music alone. "Retro style". like that megaman 9 game i think it was capcom did a while ago? they didnt make him all remixed like Bionic commando rearmed (which i loved) but they literally took it back to 80s with the graphics and went straight 8 bit. but anyway yeh i like when folks support game creation from the 16 bit era or 8 bit and really put creative time into the project. The fun factor is the next thing though....im all about fun factor

those dusty cart days??.. #:-S wow we have come a looooong way man lol

The funny thing is, Capcom took the way too easy route making MM9 and 10, as anyone could make these games with any game maker.  But enough about that, you seen how I felt about those particular games in the past.  Then again, this is Capcom we're talking about, the second laziest developer aside from Valve.

lol yeh i remember. you just reminded actually. honestly this how i feel about any "remixed" classic. ill use one example and leave at that.

Demons crest (snes)

If it ever came back remixed for PSN and 360 it better be like this here and
i wouldnt complain about it all

and hell yeh that game was hard as dino sh*t for the psp but the upgraded nostalgia
Graphics and arranged music, extras kept me wanting to play it.

to me thats a real remixed game of a 16 bit classic....even an 8 bit classic (remixed)
If strider comes back like that before a full all new 3D game happens then im
satisfied with that also. Old classics arent bad. its how they are developed.

But the homebrew stuff you have shown looks dead on like it was made during my child hood man
thats great stuff right there!
