Namco Bandai has lifted the lid on Soulcalibur V at its press event in Dubai this morning.

The game, set 17 years after Soulcalibur IV, features guest characters, Project Soul producer Hisaharu Tago told Christian Donlan for Eurogamer.

The main character is Patroklos, son of Sophitia. Patroklos is "inspired" by the gameplay of Sophitia, but is "sharper" and "more agile". He has new moves, but they're all inspired by Sophitia's.

V takes the Siegried ending of IV and builds upon it. Seigfried, now 39 years old, no longer wields the Soul Calibur sword.

V is described as a "generational shift", complete with new characters, but SCIV characters will return. "SC 1-4 was a continuous story," Tago said. "We want to make a generational shift with a new story this time."

The Soulcalibur series is famous for the inclusion of characters from other universes, such as Link from The Legend of Zelda and Yoda from Star Wars. Will other non-Soulcalibur characters feature?

"Difficult question," Tago said. "We will have guest characters as we did with Star Wars. Please stay tuned for more information on that."

V marks a shift from two-handed swords to short swords, Tago announced. The story includes "the enigma as to why the swords have become short swords".

The game's new fighting style is described as "lighter, sharper, and more elegant". The online mode has been improved with new features. "Gameplay in IV could be a little heavy, particularly when you were online – we wanted gameplay that was more fast and reactive," Tago said.

On the shift in gameplay: "Maybe the hardcore fans will be afraid that we lose the core of the gameplay, but that's not the case. And for new players it's nice to have gameplay that is more continuous – you don't need to wait as much between moves.

"There is quite some change in the gameplay from SCIV. The pace of the game has been improved, and the combos will be easier to perform, and the moves will be easier to pull out."

Elsewhere, Tago confirmed the create a character feature from previous games in the series returns, but refused to divulge details.

Namco Bandai is yet to show actual gameplay, but promised more information at E3 next month.

faster gameplay huh? i like that. back in like 95? when 3d started fighters began in the arcades they were all slow as hell and both SC and Tekken kinda kept the concept, guess now that we have sfiv and mvc3 just as fast as old school sprites they want to join in too.

Well, imho SC1 had a good sense of speed and played very well. If you sidestepped you actually sidestepped to safety. Movements in general were crisp while attacks actually flowed well. However, from SCII onward Namco's been changing the comboing ability and movement speeds. Kilik is a good example of this, for he went from an fast & tricky character with some good strings (SC1) to dependent on picking off at where the opponent's open or relying on his counter stances (SC4) .

Looking forward to this new generation called SCV, for it would be nice to use the 8-way run system  to do some stylish attacks and stuff. Btw, I didn't know you played SC, vyn. You got SCIV? I'll play with you in that just to get ready for SCV.

Sounds like they're gonna figuratively kill off something like 60% of the cast (going by what was written above)

Kind of wish they wouldn't, but I said who I needed to still be fighting.

ive played them all with my friend agustin quite a bit since highschool, same for dead or alive but ive never bought any of them, im more into traiditional 2d fighting, i do have a good idea of the gamplay and feeling though and a more dinamic or faster gamplay appeals to me as well.

:DxDie Well, she can always do a trim and tuck.

Knightmare's definitely in. Ceravntes should be in as well, although lately he doesn't play a big role in the plot like he should. Glad Siegfried is back, he's one of my faves, although I main Taki. Not sure if Namco will keep her in, but if the replace her with another ninja character then I'm good.

Man. I love the trailer but that would suck some characters will get too old in the game. 17 years? That's a long time. I would either buy it or not. But I will be willing to buy it.

Nah, I also can't wait to see some characters. The gameplay definitely looks faster. Also, it seems as though alot of fighters are taking the route of fast paced gameplay with supers. First MK, now SC. I'm not sure if thats a good or bad thing either. :P

I'm liking the faster pace, especially since it looks like you can do real combos now. Also digging the improved 8-way run. Hope Namco continues to add features to make the gameplay deeper.

Out of anticipation for SCV, I did my best to make Seigfried's new look in the Create a character. Too bad I have no way to upload.

On top of that, it's just the japanese equivalent of Kratos. I feel so cheated... Oh well. The only guest characters I ever used were Spawn, Heihachi, and Link because of how good they were. The star Wars characters in SCIV were crap. I'll just stick to Seigfried, Sophitia, and Yun Seong. And depending on his style, maybe Bangoo (Rock's son).

Lando was just guessing. Those aren't the actual guest characters. The game's only about 10% finished.
