Sonic CD and Sonic 3 and Knuckles were the best imo. Sonic Advance titles were pretty decent, too. May not be as good but they're the closest to the original Genesis games.

I usually have my sega hooked up most of the time and its safe to say I own all the genesis sonic games with the grand exception of 3D blast.

Goes to show that sonic had a few blunders even when he was regarded as godlike by his fans.

And if you agree say I, I!! For those of us that grew up on 16-bit Sonic, there just is no game after that ever did them justice. The only people that like 3D Sonic are mainstream casuals that don't know any better and never got a taste of true Sonic bliss.
I'm a little bit insulted by that. I grew up on the 2D Sonic games and find there is no substitute. However, I quite liked the first Sonic Adventure and Sonic Unleashed was the first 3D title since I actively enjoyed despite the tedium of the Werehog levels. This is really the kind of attitude that makes most of us old school fans look bad.

This is generally why I'm never fond of discussing Sonic outside of certain places.

even with this new sonic sega sucks, they only keep making and releasing more sonic games cus for them sonic is where is the money at...they don't care much about what ppl want actually.

-they canceled shenmue even before completing the story(they decided to turn the game into "yakuza")
Sega still makes good games. Everyones just so butthurt about Sonic (and to a lesser extent Shenmue) that they don't admit that. Sonic Team, however, has indeed gone down the toilet since STi was disbanded.

Also, you can blame Shenmue's lack of completion on your fellow gamers. The second game sold like fried garbage. On top of that, the creator's clashed with his superiors a lot over the direction and such. Sega loves reviving old franchises, so who knows, they may still finish the job; they've shown interest in the past based solely on fan demand. Sega loves money like anyone else; if it sold you would have seen the third installment by now. These days, it's almost hard to take chances on things that might sell iffy. Gamers are fickle; while claiming they want something new, they often fail to support it when given that.

There are several fan beloved franchises that failed financially back when Sega used to take chances. In the end, we failed them, not the other way around.

Agreed, the only characters I except other than Sonic are Tails and Knuckles...oh and Robotnik, but that's a given. They just added way too many useless characters and the series got drowned in mediocrity.
I would only add Amy to that. To me, the original five are Sonic, Amy, Tails, Knuckles and Robotnik. That's the 2D era classic characters and the only ones the franchise ever really needed.

Sorry that you feel insulted, but I won't change my stance on Sonic or Sega for anyone. He does not belong in 3D, it's what killed him along with Sega not knowing what to do with him. Oh and we didn't fail Sega, they failed us...they have no one else to blame but themselves for their failings and bad decisions. It's their own fault they turned into the mediocre company they are. Now keep in mind I'm a huge Sega fan or used to be, but putting all the blame of Sega's failings on us the gamers is a poor excuse. Sega are not what they once were and most true gamers have lost all faith in them to produce anything of actual quality. It's time for people to stop living in denial and face up to the fact that Sega and Sonic have been turned into a joke. No reason to take offense to this though as nothing on the net should be taken seriously...we are all free to express our opinion.

It's not your stance on it that's insulting, it's the implication that anyone who likes the 3D games are the mainstream casuals who don't know any better. That's a blanket statement; and blanket statements always get folks in trouble. It's like if I were to say that Halo is popular only because it rakes in the easily impressed.

Here's the thing though; Sega used to take a lot of risks. Take a look at their back catalog of games and you'll see a lot of games that were fantastic and had great fan followings but sold like horses anus. This isn't even a problem that just Sega has run into either. The world revolves around money and always will; if something is not going to sell they have no reason to make it. It's a business, not charity.

It's not a poor excuse solely because gamers are hypocrites. How many folks do you see claim to want innovation or new IP's? Pretty much everyone. But when they come around, no matter how awesome they are, nine times out of ten gamers shun them for the next Tomb Raider or Halo game. We're the ones who championed sameness over innovation with our dollars; we can talk about what we want all day long, but if it doesn't translate to sales it means nothing.

Sega's made a lot of bad decisions and done stupid things. No one will ever deny that. But laying the blame solely at their feet is somewhat shortsighted. At some point, you have to hold the gaming populace accountable for certain things as well.

No reason to take offense to this though as nothing on the net should be taken seriously...we are all free to express our opinion.
You keep saying that as though I've told your your opinion is terrible and you have no right to have one or something. Of which you'll find I've made no such implication.

But that's just it, Halo is popular only cause it rakes in the easily impressed...it's overrated trash. I hate the casual market for games, it's what is killing the industry and taking it away from the hardcore. But meh, I'll just leave this as a matter of we simply don't see eye to eye on this subject....take offense if you wish to my so called blanket statement..I really don't care either way. All I hope is for this new HD Sonic to be as good as the Genesis Sonic's, but the chances of that are unlikely.

I agree on Halo, personally. I find it to be the most over-hyped, over-rated franchise in history. But I know folks who just enjoy it as a solid first person shooter. Not as some kind of gaming mecca.

So if I were to go and say they were just easily impressed, you can imagine they'd probably be a bit insulted by the comment.

I agree, but I'm not entirely sure where the casual market came into this...

I thought we were talking about Sonic.

But meh, I'll just leave this as a matter of we simply don't see eye to eye on this subject.
Fair enough.

Ok, I guess saying anyone who likes or enjoyed any of the 3D Sonic's are just mainstream casuals is a bit of a stretch and I get what your saying on that end..and so I do apologize. I mean I did enjoy Sonic Adventure when it launched with Dreamcast, but that was the only one I liked. I just feel he belongs in 2D and it seems like Sega has forgotten Sonics roots. I also never did like Sonics redesign he got for SA. I prefer his old skool look, and I would love to see him go back to it again..even if it was just for this title. I just want the equivalent of Sonic 2 or 3 again. I mean is it so much to ask to throw us old skool gamers a bone once in a while...just so we know we are not forgotten.

Yeah, I would be a bit insulted.

I throughly enjoy the Halo series more than any other FPS I've ever played, save for GoldenEye. (Rare, you dirty bastards.)

I'll agree, the hype machine is dialed way high, but Halo itself is just a solid game overall. It's not overcomplicated like say the COD's, but not over-simplified either. it allows the casual gammer to pick up and play, but also rewards those who put the time to practice their skills. Not alot of FPS have the proper balance in this aspect. It doesn't try to be realisitc but it's more believeable than others, and was the first to get pretty much standard game mechanics right.

I mean really, how many games nowadays use the game mechanic that if you've been shot and you duck and cover for a while, magically your wounds are healed? That's a mechanic taken straight from Halo, no other game did that before, but you get cause that's what his Armor does. Also, it was the first game to restrict you to carrying only two guns, and when Halo 3 came out, you could automaticly see what people were carrying on them.

And unlike most FPS's, the games hold up over time. I mean, how many FPS have you seen just come and go, but you can always find plenty of people playing Halo? And I don't just mean Halo 3, I mean all three XBL's. Last week I was playing Halo 2 in matchmaking. It didn't even take 30 sec. to find a game and H2's been out for a few weeks shy of 5 years now.

Then there's the Forge, but I'm not gonna get into that, that thing is a monsterous beauty in itself (just google Mongoose Racing).

Thing is, I hated Halo when it first came out, but that was my hatred for Microsoft making a gaming console and trying to muscle out companies I've been loyal to for so long. And even when I first played it, I didn't get it. But I gave it the benefit of the doubt, and I totally took to it.

Call me a fanboy if you want to, but at least you understand my reasons for why I think Halo is the all-time FPS, hype or not.

EDIT:
But that's just it, Halo is popular only cause it rakes in the easily impressed...it's overrated trash. I hate the casual market for games, it's what is killing the industry and taking it away from the hardcore...

How can you even say that when Halo 3 is the top game played in the Major League Gaming Circuit. Hell, Major League Gaming wouldn't even exist if it weren't for Halo. Playing for money is about as hardcore as you can get.

Anywho, Sonic going back to his 2D roots is quite possibly the greatest thing to happen to SEGA since... I dunno, MVC2 or Burning Rangers? I mean, Sonic's never really been able to achieve his namesake in the 3D world. He's always been about getting from Point A to point B as fast as possible with as many rings as he could get his hands on, unless you're going for Perfect Bonuses and stuff. (2,000,000+ points and all chaos emeralds in Sonic 2 after just Emerald Hill Zones baby!)

If Mario has been around for as long as he has, and Megaman has been around too, there's no reason for Sonic to die out. He MUST be saved, and this is the best way to do it.

P.S.: Cool story, bro.
