After an intense months-long search, Warner Bros. has chosen Ryan Reynolds to play the title character in "Green Lantern," the studio's live-action movie based on the DC Comics hero.

Reynolds and his representatives entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests for the actor, Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test.

The film is being directed by Martin Campbell and produced by Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti.

One reason for the lengthy search process was that De Line, Campbell and the studio each had a different favorite among the finalists, making it difficult to come to a consensus.

If the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds the only actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. He recently starred in a comic-book movie, 20th Century Fox's "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," in which he played Deadpool, also known as the Merc with a Mouth. The character is being developed for a spin-off in which Reynolds will star. He also played Marvel's vampire hunter Hannibal King in "Blade: Trinity."

"Lantern" is Reynolds second stab at a DC Comics hero. A few years ago, he was attached to play the comic company's speedster "The Flash."

Actually Reynolds would be the second person to play both Marvel and DC characters....don't forget Halle Berry...aka Catwoman/Storm

Maybe the author meant the first actor to play them well.

I thought DC denouced that version of catwoman as their own. I know i would have.
Man that movie sucked...

I wonder if he's going to be Hal Jorden or if they are going to move up to Guy or Kyle at the start.

Ryan Reynolds would make a great Guy Gardner first, an OK Kyle Raynor and, wouldn't be my choice for any other GL's. Since I think I heard this was supposed to be Hal Jordan in the movie I guess we will have to see what happens.
I have always had a problem with one actor playing multiple superhero roles though, give someone else a chance to create the image, you know. This stems way back from when I heard Wesley Snipes as Black Panther as well as Blade. Even though that topic is dead at the moment, there are so many other actors that could pull off being Heroes why do they insist on getting the same actors to do these different roles.
To me it just dissolutions the experience.

He was in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which sucked.

I wonder if this movie will make it 3 for 3 for crappy comic book movies... then 4 for 4 once Deadpool is released.

Ryan Reynolds is awesome, but Green Lantern should be played by a black actor as John Stewart and Idris Elba should be the only one to play him. He hasn't been in much action, but he is a great actor from England with a great American acting voice. Having a Kyle or Hal is just too much of the same... Movie based on clueless white male who then seizes newly found powers... okay... Spawn and Catwoman were different... but we need more diversity. So I can only say this - too many white superheroes is just redundant... and IM even White. Sorry everyone but I just wanted this to be an oppertunity to get a black superhero in the limelight thats all...

I agree that Jon Stewart would be cool, but since it's the first movie and the story has to have a beginning point, it would only make sense to have it be Hal Jordan. Ryan Reynolds is a horrible choice too by the way, at least in my opinion. It's just further assurance that the story won't follow the actual real story, and that Hal Jordan is going to act like some witty moron like Ryan Reynolds. Personally, they should have gone with the actor that was used in the Green Lantern fan mad trailer. The guy from White Noise 2. They should just hire that guy who made the trailer to direct the movie. He actually seemed like he actually knew the story and characters well. We just have another horribly made comic book movie to look forward to now. Yay.

i am black, Nubian being the correct term. but yeah i agree we could have some more black superheros on the screen. meteor man and steel did suck big time. but neither is really worth a ticket to have seen. need more viable good actors to play them. wesley snipes cant play everbody and he set the bar with blade for super hero black actors to follow. i have all 3 of the Blade films and love each one. i too wanna see how this all turns out. cant wait.

He would be a great Flash again, but I would never have imagines him as GL, that would be like casting Val Kilmer as Batman.

Well the dark knight didnt exactly stick to the source.

Batman was in an outfit that wasnt just cloth
The Joker didnt have face paralisis, and he wore makeup...
The Real Joker was stained white, like a full body tatoo.

so they made cosmetic differences, but it still fit's acey's criteria.

also on the topic of ryan reynolds, I liked his character in adventureland.
