Sorry, but there`s no point on doing that...everyone is more open now to the "warehouse situation",it`s impossible to avoid warehousing as long as the internet exists, leading your journey to a dead end before even starting.
besides, who could be interested on chasing ppl down for something you didn`t even made?Creators should be concerned about that, not normal ppl who cannot even make a palette or a single sprite(it`s not that you don`t know how to,but you get the point i guess...) MUGEN POLICE HAS NEVER WORKED!period...  \-/o

Want to fight warehouses? Keep them out of the community you're a part of. Completely.

Don't link to them, don't mention them. Just treat them as gone, dead weight amongst a sea of internet crap.

EKFM's tips for fighting warehouses:

1. Report their sites as child porn, that always goes over well.
2. If their site has a commenting/emailing feature, send them thousands upon thousands of death threats;  the less grammatically correct the better.
3. Tell them you know C++ and will hack their computer if they don't take down the warehouse.
4. Tell them you found a leaked beta and send them Kung Fu Man instead.
5.  Invite them to fight you in real life and tell them they are cowards if they decline to travel 2000 miles to where you claim to live to fight you.
6.  Mess up the MUGEN article on Encyclopedia Dramatic to insult the warehouser as best as you can;  the more outrageous, the better.
7.  Make a video on Youtube that is directed towards the warehouser that tells him/her how evil he/she is.  It's important to only allow comments that support your video and not allow the warehouser to post a rebuttal.
8.  If you're a MUGEN creator, take down your MUGEN works until all warehouses are thoroughly pwnt.
9.  If you're not a MUGEN creator, but are friends of/are acquainted to/have heard about in a passing reference of a MUGEN creator who took down their works, complain to the warehouser that you will never be able to download the creator's works again because of he/she warehouses unrelated MUGEN works.
10. Suicide.

anyway there's no way to stop the "badguy" even though the rules changed a bit warehousers end anti-warehouser may still be at eachother's throats.

not really, because it only applies to a select few cases, which are 100% original creations like DragonClaw. If the copyright thing applied, then mugen as a whole would be illegal. why go to such lengths just to keep someone from downloading something, anyway?

actually the coding is protectable by copyright laws, not just the spriting
also your right i do have no life, but then again thats the price people pay for devoting free time to something they think needs to be looked at

actually the coding is protectable by copyright laws, not just the spriting
this is debateable for a couple of reasons, first because without said spriting, the coding is worthless. And more importantly, it's part of a freeware engine with absolutely no value outside of the community.

also your right i do have no life
:(
Title: Re: the new mugen police
Post by: Laxxe23 on September 22, 2007, 06:35:44 PM
and without the coding the sprites would be nothing, unless your saying sprites are all there are to characters, i highly doubt that and if thats what you mean then im highly offended as a creator that you think that coding isnt important

coding can be copyrighted, sprites can as well, and when creators make stuff they do it hoping that people wont host it elsewhere, and when it does then people like me report it
hmmmm i wonder what other creators think of this?

sprites + coding = char
sprites - coding = fail
sprites + sprites = .sff(lol)
code+code = serious business

its nots the sprites and graphics that make the char. its the .cns and .cmd(in some cases .st)

Seems like too many people are very sensitive and feel that they need to snap on others when they feel 'threatened'.

So far, this thread isn't getting out of hand, but let7s end any personal comments to each other, or people will get warnings. I will not repeat myself again.

4chan rules 1 and 2 are (this is not an insult its just a term) newfag rules, it doesnt apply to (again not an insult but a term used in 4chan for old people, theones that have been there for a while) oldfags
also when he said 4chan nub he meant its from 4chan noob,  (honestly i dont see noob as an insult)

ill reitierate
rules 1 and 2 are for new rules that are for new people
and 4chan nub means: its 4chan noob

also reporting stuff thats illegaly uploaded is something i do on the side and i was being sarcastic about the no life thing
and i fail to see how reporting something that violates copyrite laws is pathetic, whats wrong with making sure people download characters from their creators website and giving respect to their creators

Normally, I stay away from 4chan. It's not all bad, but the stuff that *is* bad is really bad. Like... stuff that would get me blacklisted bad.

Also, I don't agree with this whole "Mugen Police" thing, and how this is made to seem like a black and white case. "Respecting the creator" is different for each one, and it isn't necessarily violated every time something is warehoused.

Interesting. Thanks for the info.

However, this is not 4chan, so using rules from another forum here at Infinity doesn't make sense.

i wanna make a new mugen police to track down warehouses and eliminate them from the web anyone interested?
warehouse consumers  must make them last downloads
why spend hours of your life tracking down warehouses just to shut them down?... if you dont dig what people are doing you can always turn a blind eye and not do it yourself...

dude.......... I'm a gamer at heart......... I like to test every possible characters out there.......... if the char is private, forbidden or stolen and I have the opportunity to download it, I will.............. do I support warehousers?! yes and no............. no, it sucks for the creator because his wishes were not respected and yes because most of the time, char warehoused are the ones that were created years before, and the creators just left the scene and new mugen users weren't there to download and enjoy the char.......... I think it gives a chance for everyone to play great characters from past creators............

and laxxe23, yah downloading from warehouses is "bad"........... I know a lot of users are there, saying they don't download from warehouse and yet, they have Blaque among other characters that are said to be private......... those are hypocrites to me.......... hey if U tell me U never downloaded from warehouses and you're against it, good for U........... in the past yes i have downloaded from them, but since i found what they do to us creators ive been doing my best to take em down,
im saying that you should be happy w/ what you have and shouldnt dissrespect creators, take moldredd for example, only afew people actually have sin, (me being one of them) it was meant to be public, but because of people continually disrespecting her wishes and warehousing her characters, the public will never get sin, the same is true for many other creators as well

This is what I don't get with some creators. As I said before, you'd be a fool to release a character and expect nothing bad to happen. There are disrespectful people on the internet, and, guess what? Some play Mugen as well! If you can't handle disrespect, you might as well not make anything.

my sentiments exactly. i can understand going private if people make their own char by stealing from yours but if its only warehousing which is inevitable in cyberspace.then you shouldnt even release your char but keep it to yourself.
cause once something is shared in the internet you cant stop it being uploaded all over just like all the music and movies that are all over the internet
and they should also realize that the ones doing the warehousing dont matter cause they dont frequent these forums where most people respect creators.
the people who matter are the ones who frequent these forums and care about mugen and its creators. but it doesnt matter to these creators and they just toss aside the majority that cares for the few who dont great!

no but people are hypocrites when they are against warehousers and download music or software hey even playing a rom is illegal. so yeah i think everyone is guilty of something and being on this crusade to take down warehousers is just plain stupid. i mean we have a guy in here who is being look at by the fbi for leeching and we have no problem as long as he does not go to a warehouse. i think his name is barbary or something like that.

This I just don't get, you are willing to be criminally charged to stop a site that you don't even have a creation on? <_<|...|

Wugzapanzermanathod<--one of the few people whose brain actually functions in the real world while sitting at his comp.

Mugen has a number of hypocritical types lurking, this has been staus quo. I disagree with leaking betas but at the same time you can prevent this on your own. There's no sense in trusting people over an internet connection, I just can't see it. As far as copyrights go, since when can I claim owner's rights on previously copyritten material? Just because I draw over capcom employee A's sprites I own them? I think not. Copyritten material being swipped does not only apply to warehousers and "cut and paste" chars. You should enforce copyright tolerance all around if it is considered morally incorrect.

I've seen "creators" passing out photoshop keygens on another site, why is this ok? <_<|...|
Of the people who edit sigs how many use copyrighted photos or comic art work without permission?  <_<|...|
Where do our bgms come from? Oh thats right: we download them.  <_<|...|
Where do most sprites come from after all? Oh yeah, dowloading roms. (as well as ripping them and proceeding to claim them as our own) <_<|...|
^Sounds too! <_<|...|
This is not an attack on those who do these things, but a reminder of things to consider before we go condeming the actions of others. As an artist, I understand the frustration of plagiarism. I don't condone it but look around this is the internet, it's futile to fight these battles.

Twice in one thread? Wow...

In any case, I'm glad someone else has sense as well. I've downloaded pirated games, music, movies, and programs, and I've bought bootlegged CD's before. Also, as some know, using the Mugen engine was illegal (I'm not too sure on KFM's abandonware(?) statement. ). Who am I to claim copyright on sprites made by someone else?

As for stopping warehouses, nothing can really stop them save for all Mugen activity ceasing for a few years, or stopping the internet.

Release stuff not for respect, but for the hopes of entertaining someone. Respect is a bonus, and disrespect is a side effect.

agreed.

As for abandonware, I'm not too familiar with it so I looked around and got this from wikipedia(maybe not so credible?):

Quote
Abandonware refers to computer software that is no longer current. While the term has been applied largely to older games, other classes of software are sometimes described as such also. Definitions of "abandoned" vary; generally, it is used to refer to software that (1) is no longer available for legitimate purchase and/or (2) is at least a certain number of years old.

The term has no legal meaning, and much abandonware is not in the public domain, and so cannot be legally copied or distributed without the permission of the owner. Copyrights in the U.S. do not expire until 70 years after the death of the copyright owner, or if the copyright is held by a company (as is often the case with software), 95 years after first publication.[1]
The term abandonware is used to make copying software appear legitimate, in the case where the software is still under copyright protection.[2]

The law
There is no recognition of a legal term abandonware in copyright law. There is a long held concept of abandonment in trademark law, but it is a direct result of the infinite term of trademark protection. Currently, a copyright can be released into the public domain if the owner clearly does so in writing; however this formal process is not considered abandoning, but rather releasing. Those who do not own a copyright cannot merely claim the copyright abandoned and start using it without permission of the copyright holder, who would then have a legal remedy. Hence abandonware is sometimes considered to be synonymous with "old warez".

Hosting and distributing copyrighted software without permission is illegal.

Some who are ignorant of copyright law have incorrectly taken this to mean that abandonware is legal to distribute, although no software is old enough for its copyrights to have expired. Even in cases where the original company no longer exists, the rights usually still belong to someone else, though no one may know who actually owns the rights, including the owners themselves.

A neccesary evil though..... >:D

I've always had respect for those two; now, it all becomes clear to me as to why.
;D just speaking my mind friend.

also regarding respect
respect has to be earned
if you have made your creations private then of course they will be warehoused what do you think?
you are being stingy with your creations(and i am not talking about betas or unfinished chars) then not many ppl will respect you cause you are not giving anything to mugen community just making chars and keeping them in your bosom and saying because they are being warehoused. gimme a break! they are getting warehoused more than online creations cause you dont share your chars.
crreators get respect when they make great creations and they share them as well no matter what. they are hte ones who get the most respect
