Stem Cell Transplant Cures HIV In 'Berlin Patient'

On the heels of World AIDS Day comes a stunning medical breakthrough: Doctors believe an HIV-positive man who underwent a stem cell transplant has been cured as a result of the procedure.

Timothy Ray Brown, also known as the "Berlin Patient," received the transplant in 2007 as part of a lengthy treatment course for leukemia. His doctors recently published a report in the journal Blood affirming that the results of extensive testing "strongly suggest that cure of HIV infection has been achieved."

Brown's case paves a path for constructing a permanent cure for HIV through genetically-engineered stem cells.

Last week, Time named another AIDS-related discovery to its list of the Top 10 Medical Breakthroughs of 2010. Recent studies show that healthy individuals who take antiretrovirals, medicine commonly prescribed for treating HIV, can reduce their risk of contracting the disease by up to 73 percent.

While these developments by no means prove a cure for the virus has been found, they can certainly provide hope for the more than 33 million people living with HIV worldwide. Alongside such findings, global efforts to combat the epidemic have accelerated as of late, with new initiatives emerging in the Philippines and South Africa this week.

i just heard that on channel ten news they got the cure for hiv/aids and dude is fully cured!

the medical field ain't no different than the street a drug dealer is a drug dealer no matter how you put it!! they get you on the comback to get you feeling good but only temporary, like a drug deal !! cuz there's no money in a cure only medicine that keeps you coming back to stay fit....  but  seriously this would help if tehy dont try to play hustleman with that and our eggheads over here need to look more further into stem cells as well!! who knows what other things they may unlock with the work behind it!!

This is a great breakthrough if it can be replicated. If they can get rid of HIV then Cancer should be able to be solved easily

yeh i read on this some time ago. haha im just realizing someone posted it here too. that was definitely something. yeh when they find a cure watch these idiots start going even more buck wild smfh. But this is great cuz its good for folks that get caught up by bad blood transfusions. Babies born with it n such.

Haha. The Government will make their money back on this cure since you have to get a bone marrow transplant(which is not guaranteed to take). But its good to know that they have stepped forward towards a real cure HIV and the Big C, so long as we don't turn into zombie vampires who hate the sun and lose all of our hair.

heck the only reason there is a war on drugs is cuz the government wants to put their competition on the shelve. do you know how many drugs on the street are similar to the one that you get over the counter ?? too many look at a methaone junkie and look at a heroin addict , look the same , don't they.... but still i hope they unlock some more secrets through this research .there's a few folks kinda against for what reason i don't other the whole bs about the embryos and what not . they acting like the docs snatched it out of the womans tummy an kille it then put it in the test tubes. i'm sorry folks a child doesn't begin after the woman has a cigarette after sex  !! sorry to be crude about it, but hey it's the truth...
