MUGEN Going Mainstream: Would it be the end?
« on: August 23, 2007, 10:02:11 AM »
If MUGEN were to grow out of obscurity, would it end forever? We all know that there are idiots out there who would try and sell it, and if it was mainstream, we'd have even more of those idiots.

What do you think would happen?

Really is better not to think in this, And it is better in thinking about a better future for the Mugen, since I believe that the Mugen was advancing enough (for example, now the Hi-res, Mugen Online, Infintiy cat, etc....)

@Eternaga: True, those of us who've lingered in this community, throughout the years, possess a somewhat negative outlook for the engine's future.  However, that consensus doesn't apply to everyone.

In all honesty (& think about this), if Mugen were to plunge any further into it's "mainstream" status, we would lose whatever order remains.  It's not a question of holding back the progression of newcomers, it's a question of just how much of a free-for-all (or circus, if you will) this community could become.

What do you think would happen?

"Grow out of obscurity?" Are you living on another planet? Since the advent of a little site by the name of Youtube, this community has all but discarded its niche status.

Any and all who feel otherwise are simply delusional.

Okay, so it's not obscure, but I'm saying, what if MUGEN became popular on a global scale?

Let me make this clear:
If MUGEN were to become so popular that we wouldn't see hundreds of people a day saying things like "how did u get the sprites" or "i wish dis was a real game", would it be the end?

I understand what you're saying and my response is no. It might drive away lots of creators, what with leechers coming in and warehousing stuff or stealing sprites/coding. But mugen will never end. There will always be a talented MVC fan that wants to create a full game. After that person shows sprites he's making, a crew will form, then a forum then fans will gather at said forum. Enough rambling already BigJ!! well I think you get my point.

You equating "leechers" with the average M.U.G.E.N non-contributor/player. Either way, I can respect your position and shall not delve into it any further.

Nothing lasts forever (which of course, is the unfortunate inevitability of even the most worthwhile material), and it's unrealistic to expect this of the Mugen engine.  When the time comes, acceptance is one's only option.  Live for the moment, and just enjoy all that is Elecbyte's legacy...while it exists.
