Smoother Graphics, Less Pixels
« on: June 23, 2012, 07:42:45 PM »
I just wanted inform everyone of something I've just discovered.

I'm playing Street Fighter III.
With 640 x 480 res it  looks O.k , but  320 X 240 looks really smooth and the blocky pixels are gone !

But this res does not seem an obvious choice as the Mugen CFG file only mentions 3 Resolutions options :
640x480   Standard definition 4:3
1280x720   High definition 16:9
1920x1080  Full HD 16:9

Why does it not mention 320 X 240 ?

The pixels have been driving me crazy but now I feel very satisifed with this res option.
So this is for anyone like me who did not already know.

By  the way, I've noticed that HR Lifebars which looked fine in 640 X 480 mode, seem to change after switching to 320 X 240 mode, no doubt this is a result from using HR lifebars in a low res setting.
So I had to alter some of the code in the parametre fields to make them look right in 320 X 240 mode.

Veterans probably already knew this.
I hope this is a help to anyone new.

That is because you are now using most characters in what is their native resolution. All old games are low res so the sprites look really normal at low res. But you can't display HR particularly well at that resolution so the happy medium is 640x480. Low res sprites look worse the higher you take the resolution, that's just logical.

Hey Cyanide
How hard is it to make Lo Res sprites/stages in to Hi Res ?

I've got Photoshop, I'm willing to learn some stuff and make something cool.

Fill me in here, are all the new Full Game Projects in HR?

I've seen some really interesting Mugen games on Youtube, as impressive as they look, they still appear a bit blocky  & pixelated. Is this how all games look or is it just the video quality on Youtube ?

There are a few ways to update sprites. The fast/easiest way is to filter all the sprites. There are several image filters you can use, or even IMT's own filtered characters. Results will be VERY mixed though. Some may look good/decent, some may be a mess.

The better/slower method is respriting all the sprites. That is, to open up the sprites in PS, scale them up and redraw them. This could be practical for stages, providing you can sprite fairly well. Characters, however have hundreds of sprites (most times) and can take a long time to do.

Guilty Gear, Hokuto no Ken and Blazblue characters should all be Hi-Res, as well as the SSFII: HD Remix characters.

Most of these stages hav these blocks as u say, but the thing is all about the rendered image u using for ur stages... let's say if u can get one HD pic and if u actually dont touch it or resize it, that'll make u wont see any of those issues on the screen (blocks)..

Most of the things is on the stages ( X & Y size stuff).

Otherwise on sprited backgrounds is kinda hard u see these problems on the stages.

The best way to do it is to filter the sprites one by one. This means to extract them form the SFF file, use the photoshop plugin called "Alien Skin Blow Up" then you add the sprites back into the SFF file. Then you just need to do some minor code adjustments.
