Mario needs a little help

So I've been working on this for a couple hours, mostly scratch (Disgaea colors.) I can't make him look right and I'm positive it's the fault of the shading. I don't know if it's the palette I used or if my shading technique just blows hard, but I cannot make this look nice to me. It just feels like a crappy Flash game. Any help?
