Retro Stages Ideas ~suggestions welcome~

Evening all. I'm still in the process of at least updating my stages (to some degree), and re-releasing them to the public. However, I want to increase my level of rips to be made available, so this can be done. I've got the means to rip anything SNES related, and now I've attained the stuff needed for anything Genesis related (32x is a possibility, but not too far off...)

So, I've started to go back to Genesis ripping, for this to work. One of the ideas that are on the fence (and in progress), is stages from Shadow Dancer. I've got the means to rip whatever is needed from anything Genesis related (despite there isn't much, as I'm more of a retro stage maker anyway).


So, I'm putting this as an open discussion to anyone who wants to see something released, that is fully retro in terms of the era of gaming that I, and a number of others here grew up in. The stages won't come quick, depending on what game I do the ripping, but be sure they will come.

I await to see what anyone has in store to post here.  :O*D

I don't see why not. I should also make a cue list, so it would show what has been requested, and what is being worked on. As well as what has been completed. This would make things a little bit easier.

The only difference between finding already made rips, and doing the rips myself, is the fact that I can have them in the proper size. This way, if I do need to locate already made rips of hard to find layers, I can use what I've done, as an active base. This will streamline the process.

This is an example of what I'm trying to rip, and so far, I'm making good progress.



I had to find a specific version of Gens to pull this off, without resorting to using Artmoney. It's easier for me to rip, when it is emulator specific, rather than something like Artmoney. As it is sad to say, there are very little Genesis emulators that even have layer ripping.

SNES on the other hand, has a tool that will save me some time, without using a lot of screenshots. It involves a little hex editing, and a tool that looks into savestates.

For the time being, that is my main goal. The real challenge will be arranging them, to fit MUGEN standards.

Try using Debugens, it has more layer control and you can turn the bg pink, for example.
Without it, some games are impossible to rip.

Be cool to have a stage or 2 based on star fox on snes. Venom's background is one of my faves. The old fassioned 3-d like objects would be funny to have pop up in there too.

Groovy! Im very glad to see you are absorbing in some new ideas and suggestions for future works man 8)

Aside from the very cool animated shadow dancer stages (btw im looking forward to that statue of liberty night stage)

Here are a couple games that i felt would be cool to create some stages from also

Stages from the Ninja warriors game SNES


Stages from Genesis Eternal champions. But with a twist. im not sure how far you can go with it but i was thinking it would be cool if you can some how code in the fatalities effects of the stages maybe?


I shouted O illusionista and the crew that did that full game before on a X Kalibur stage already but maybe you can pick out some more from that game.


There are a ton other retro stages i had in mind but ill let you feel out those suggestions i posted on so far ;)

@ Blizzard Buffalo: OMG! DUDE! you read my mind. Cold Shadow was my stuff back then. I still play it right now, because it's a great favorite of mine. I've got quite a few ideas for a number of stages from that game.

@ SpiderMew: That sounds like something that would be very possible. I would like to develop stages for both 1.0 & winmugen. Since I still use both, despite 1.0 is more superior. I could do better viewing in WM+. And Star Fox would be a great start for my first 1.0 released stage. The 3D objects popping in & out, as well as other objects flying around the stage, would make a great scene.

@ Uncle Ilu: Thank you for the big tip.  :)  I was using GensKMOD with the screenshot I took, and I found that to be very limited. Completely forgot about Debugens   o.O#, as I'm going to need a pink layer for it to be a proper rip. Especially if I plan to rip Shadow Dancer. I already have stuff from Revenge of Shinobi on hand, like Chinatown & the military base. So they should appear at some point.

@DeMoNk@I: Believe it or not, I "had" the rips from The Ninja Warriors, back before my old computer was stolen. It was on my to do list to create every stage from that game, and make it available. It was the same for Eternal Champions & X-Kalibur 2097. I had all of that ripped... :'( Most of what I had ripped, was long before I got into MUGEN, during my Beats of Rage days. I was in the Beats of Rage Dreamcast scene, and made tutorials for burning & creation at the time. Used those same talents to create MUGEN based retro stages. You'd be surprised how similar, yet different stages for both really are, in terms of dimensions and whatnot.

But that's okay, I'm at a point where I can start fresh. I just need to get my page back up and running, since I'm on a new host and all. The layout is so stale atm, lol.

Keep the ideas coming guys, I like where everything is going so far.  :cool

What interests me here, is that vsnes has everything debugens has, but a little bit more. Can separate everything layer based, simply by using savestates as the template for me to get what I need. Can separate everything like Kawaks can, or just directly inspect layers itself. It is MUCH better than TilED in this instance and can create better, more cleaner rips.

I might be able to pump out SNES based stages faster than Genesis stages, but we will see.

I'd love to see more Capcom vs. SNK 2 stages. The one made by MINI42 are crap.

I'm putting the list of what has been suggested, right here on the first post. This way, I can keep track of it all as well as you all can. Keep in mind of one important thing: Despite ideas and suggestions can come in, there are some games that may not work or get ripped properly by normal means. And those games may take longer to rip. The games getting ripped, as well as their creation will not be ripped in order. Red text meaning they cannot be ripped at this time, or, I am unable to properly rip it.

For each one that I complete, whether it is ripped, or in the process of being built as a stage, I will update the status. When a ripped stage from a game goes into "Stage WIP status", I'll add a link to that in a thread that I'll make for all new WIP's that get created.

The first post is currently being edited, at the moment this current post goes up.

@DV: ah groovy, so you were already in that direction with those stages lol cool :cool..Not a bad thing to start fresh again at times i guess. Im really looking forward to seeing how these stages come out. And yeh the stages you have in mind for Revenge of shinobi was on my mind too man. Two of my favorite stages :thumbsup:

Thanks. Everything listed will not have a set order. So you may see something get ripped in order, you may not. It also depends on the complex nature of the game's layers in question.

They will be done in terms of easy to rip, or hard. The above will assist in determining it. For now, I'm going with the games that are the easiest to rip. This will better prepare me for ones that are harder (CvS2 & Shadow Dancer).

It's kind of funny, that Revenge of Shinobi had easier layers and tiles to rip with Debugens, than Shadow Dancer. As Shadow Dancer appears easier to rip with GensKMOD. As long as the tools are at my disposal, then it should not be a problem.

What I posted was to give you a good idea of what I'm using to rip the needed layers, and that it wouldn't take that long to achieve. vSNES can use ZSNES or SNES9x savestate files. So either emulator would suffice. If you want to help in this, by all means go right ahead.

With that said, first page post has been updated. Now with a legend guide. To make it easier, lol

Dragon Master - I Really would love the stages from this game converted

Dragoon Might - Could be awesome to see converted as well

Mutant DNA    - The characters are being made these days, and that it would be cool to see the stages converted :)

Superior Soldiers - Stages from this little game would be cool

The Eye of Typhoon - This game needs some love, and stages from this game would be epic, as the characters are slowly being converted to mugen as well

Violent Vengeance - Same as stated above, the chars are being converted, so the stages would be epic

I could even mention Tekken ''1'' stages, I would love Stadium stage and Fiji stage from Tekken 1 atleast :) or was Fiji from Tekken 2? hmm...  o.O#

I've never ripped anything from the PSX/PS1 library before (I've got a ton of ideas for games to be ripped there, I just lack proper tools). But there's no harm in trying, right? I've added them to the list.
