Changing fonts?

How would I go about taking fonts out of a fnt file and editing them, or viewing them? Is fntmaker the only tool...

Okay, now what if I wanted to change a special font. One with pictures, for example the Mugen Mega Mix screenpack displays small pictures of chars as a font. When I open up that certain font file (title3.fnt) I get an error, but after I was able to change the pic with the new one I made, I don't get errors anymore opening it. Everything basically runs smoothly except for one thing... The font I had just modified doesn't even show up... What am I doing wrong?

Anybody? do I have to code the new fonts into the lifebars and titlescreen?
