Jesse Eisenberg has been cast to play the Man of Steel's arch nemesis Lex Luthor in director Zack Snyder's as-yet untitled Superman-Batman film, Warner Bros. Pictures announced on Friday, Jan. 31. (For months, rumors circulated that Bryan Cranston was the front-runner to take on the role.)

What's more, the studio revealed that Oscar winner Jeremy Irons will play Bruce Wayne's loyal confidant Alfred.

"Lex Luthor is often considered the most notorious of Superman's rivals, his unsavory reputation preceding him since 1940," Snyder said in a statement. "What's great about Lex is that he exists beyond the confines of the stereotypical nefarious villain. He's a complicated and sophisticated character whose intellect, wealth and prominence position him as one of the few mortals able to challenge the incredible might of Superman. Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions."

I have seen numerous actors portray lex but I think the shy Jesse Eisenberg would fail to capture the tone and character lex sets.

Either WB wants massive star power in any way it can get it, or Jesse scared the bigwigs at casting.

Jeremy irons seems like a perfect fit for alfred. Both are monotone yet when they talk, you listen.

Wow, the Lex casting choice surprised me. However, I can kind of see how WB is going a different direction with Lex it seems. They're obviously going for a young genius type of Lex. Obviously I rather see an older Lex, but maybe Eisenberg will do something really special. The previous live action Lex's (I've never seen Smallville though) have always bored me, so I don't mind seeing a different take on him. I rather see more alien villains instead!

Not familiar with the guy who's going to play Alfred. But I'm glad they cast someone who seems to be the right age and stuff to play him. Maybe he'll be more like the recent Earth One Alfred? That would be fun to see!

Well ... for Batman i was one of the guys thinking that Heath Ledger wasnt at the level to perform one of the most complicated characters from comics ..... But he did it great .... beyond any expetations.

May be this kid can give Lex Luthor a new and intersting angle ..... I think that they plan to make a Lex Luthor so lovely and trustable that all people will believe in any crap he said .... but keeping his darker side for his confrontations with Batman and Sups .... that is the part im not very sure it will go well ...... But as i said, Ledger surprised all of us ......

Much like most of what DC seems to be doing right now with this franchise, it's obvious they are going for different takes on these characters. So, depending on what kind of Lex they are going for, this guy could be the best fit for what they have in mind. Same with the Gal Gadot or Affleck castings. Doesn't mean it will be bad or good. Doesn't mean comic fans will like it. But they're trying to mix things up, like they did in Man of Steel.

nah im huge on movies and that role he did wasnt overrated imo. i thought id never see another great joker role since jack or the old old actor from the live tv show. heath came through and nailed it. i hated that they casted him at first but i was proved wrong. was he the best joker actor on screen of all time? no....but he was memorable and could have been the best joker of THIS time era ON screen.

Now whos the best Joker personality offscreen of all time? MARK HAMILL

that alone voice kills all competition and he dont even have to act on screen who would have thought jedi boy could do jokers voice? but then again as a horror movie fan myself i remember him playing in john carpenters body bag movie way back in the 90s. He became a psycho because of an eye implant. He played that mad man roll well^^

All jokes aside I have full faith in Zack and team to make a great movie and even if it's not, then the action scenes will be worth the price of admission.
