what do you guys use to make those cool mugen sigs/avas

Most of us use photoshop but Gimp is a free alternative but it is not like the photoshop powerhouse as it has less features but you don't really need them in small professional jobs.

I use Photoshop 7 for sigs and editing FX for mugen chars, and I used Paint for editing sprites.

i dont have  photoshop  :'(
