yes quite well with magic, but only when he has the staff
when he loses it he has to use a little kiddy staff (LOL)

as you saw in the picture above
after awhile he learns to actually fight hand-to-hand
quite well actually
also there is this one REALLY cool scene in the anime were Negi and the girls are attacked by a Golem
and Negi pulls out the staff and starts doing these Bo Staff poses XD
I was like o crap Negis about to go Donotello(TMNT) on his butt! XD
but...that was in the anime so it was all for show... :-"
