Title: Retsu - SFA style
Post by: Aztlan on March 14, 2012, 08:55:44 AM
It's been a while since I haven't showed my wip about Maki.
Thanx to x-boy who had a copy of her for the Final Fight project, you will be able to see more progress about her sometime in the future.

But this place is about another capcom character: I'm a big Street Fighter fan, and I would like to present you one of my new wip: Retsu

Thank you guys.

I have no real idea yet about Supers, specials, etc, but I'm trying first to respect the moves he has in SF1.

Nice edit!
But his Gi needs to be bigger. Take a look at an edit done by a friend of mine, Evil Orochi:

and I suggest you to not include hadouken, or it will turn into another shotokan.

Remember: he doesn't fights Karate, he fights shorinji kempo (http://www.google.com.br/search?q=shorinji+kempo&hl=pt-BR&safe=off&prmd=imvnsb&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=0dRlT9iqHsrAtwfBqYD-DQ&ved=0CFgQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=643)

Yes, I know, but like all characters appearing in the SFA series, Retsu needs an update on the costume and moves.
For example, Guy, Cody, Maki are different in the sfa series than in FF.
For example, Ken, Ryu, Sagat, Adon, Birdie, and others have a different updated costume in the SFA series.
Fighting Street was the first draft of the Street Fighter series: even the ending of SF1 was changed for a Ryu controlled by the Satsui no Hado during a short time and creating the Sagat's famous scarce.

I know he is an ex-shaolin and not a shotokan, but shaolins use their chi to increase their power.
The Buddha's Palm is what Retsu could use and that Dan has stolen to create his Gadoken.
Chun-Li isn't a shotokan and she uses her chi to create a fireball.
Plus the fact that Retsu was a friend of Gouken: he could have learn some techniques to update his style.

It could work like Ryo's Ko-oh Ken from KoF 96 onwards. That would make more sense, plus he wouldn't look like yet another shotoclone.

You could make it look more like a large hand instead of a ball, too. Considering how religious the shaolin are, I doubt that once he was kicked out of the temple, he stopped doing his Buddhist rituals, so if you want to go in more that sort of direction with the moves, that would be perfect. You know, maybe some heacy hits that give him a pre-strike super-armor (considering the physical training they put their bodies through, I think it would be perfect)

he is not an ex-shaolin. Shorinji is the japanese word for Shaolin. Shorinjin Kempo is a martial art which were "stolen" from the shaolin monks from China during the Japanese invasion. Its the base for the Okinawa-te, which is the base for the Karate. I have some friends which fights Shorinjin.

I think you could add a move like we added on our Sean Matsuda for Spec Ops, its a repetitive move (like fei-long rekkaken). You can download it at my site.

This wip looks interesting and for the sake of Retsu not becoming shotoclone here're some reference videos:

All About Capcom said Retsu was a Shorinji (japanese term for Shaolin) and was excommunicated of the order because of the use of forbidden techniques used outside the Shorinji order.

On the SF1 bio, we learn that Retsu is an excommunicated monk who's using forbidden Shorinji Kempo techniques. He is a master of the Shorinji Kempo. He enters the Street Fighter Tournament to fight powerful fighters. He is the first to lose against Ryu.

To return on the wip, I haven't decided yet what sort of fireball I would use.. maybe a hand as GPOA said, or a simple fireball (not a big one like above, it was just for the fun).

Thank you Exelord for the vids, I will try to use some moves for the Throws.

As maybe some of you seen on the net, there is a picture of Retsu and Dan and his nose broken.
I will use the Iron Head technique to show what happen on this picture.

Crazy Kung-Fu and Shaolin Soccer are fun movies which can be good exaggerated shaolin techniques.

The sprite work is pretty good. Is he planned to play like a sfa character?

Yes, the main base is Marco Rodriguez's body + Dhalsim's head.

The sprite work is pretty good. Is he planned to play like a sfa character?

Yes, it will be coded with the N64Mario's sfa template.

so it will be made for winmugen, right?

Yes, I don't know much code, and the template works on winmugen, so it will work like that.
I don't play mugen much (never?) but I find it fun to sprite.

If I must give a percentage of sprites done (without count the effects):
Maki  70-80% (already coded)
Retsu 5% (not coded)
