Title: Having fun converting LR to HR characters
Post by: yosifun on January 28, 2010, 08:48:46 AM
I have been thinking for a long time how to convert LR characters to HR characters..

I don't want to redraw the sprites and I'm looking for a way to make the enlargement more smooth similar to what bajm6277 is doing (http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/Forum_345/index.php?topic=25923 (http://www.infinitymugenteam.com/Forum_345/index.php?topic=25923))

This is what I have done so far:
(http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/3893/charbatman.png) (http://img268.imageshack.us/img268/446/charbatman1.png) (http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/8742/charbatman2.png)

(http://img10.imageshack.us/img10/3926/charthor.png) (http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/8210/charthor1.png) (http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/595/charthor2.png)

* Left sprite is the original sprite (after doubling it's size).
* Middle one is after smoothing.
* Right one is after smoothing (better details but worse margins).

I'm currently trying to find the best combination between the middle sprite and the right one.

What do you say? Is there a potential? Would you want to play with your characters after a conversion like this?

I think you can get allot better with more pratice.
It took me a very long time to get as good as I am with low rez sprites.
With more pratice i think you'll get better at it.

I always say, when developing new sprite editing skills, always start with mega man sprites.

Mega man can be turned into so meny things, and ive praticed on mega man sprites sence long before i discoverd mugen.

Thanks for the advice SpiderMew  :)

I don't actually sprite at all when doing these edits, I just use filters and such because on the long term it will be easier for me to apply such filters on all sprites for all of the characters I have instead of editing each and every one (yup I'm very lazy ;D).

Would you actually play with such characters on your roster? (after perfecting the technique of course)

make that batman Hi-Res & I will use him

You know what i just noticed, which has nothingto do with you. The bat symbol on his chest is a mess :(

You need to fix that before conversion

If you are going to continue experimenting with that batman, use the master pallete of the sff not any of the other palletes.

Maybe if I'm not lazy enough :D

The whole idea of this method is not having to edit each sprite by myself..

I have a program called PhotoZoom (paid dearly for it) that allows you to enlarge images with little loss of quality. If you want to try ...

I made this picture to show how it behaved with the program.
Other filters have this program that will achieve better results.
