Title: Grand Theft Auto 4 - Official Discussion Thread
Post by: aPoCaLyPsE on April 22, 2008, 03:19:36 PM
This is going to be the longest week for me EVER! I have the Collector's edition paid in full since it was suppost to be released in February. Never did I ever think I'd be spending $100 ($95.50 something like that) on 1 video game. Anyone else this excited? Or feel like sharing any info on whats to come or expect with this release?

;*)) I would never get tired of that, the game has such a mind of its own sometimes have u ever been flying and get hit by another plane, lol have u ever been driving and hit by a plane  :DxDie (both happened to me) but I think that what makes the game fun the randomness \.

The most fun part of GTAs are the ever present Hundred Glitches...

I'll never forget falling from a plane to fall on the water, then teleport back somehow into the plane that didn't move and jump back into the water just to repeat the process infinitely, I had to reset the game as it was jumping and teleporting by itself. :D :D

I don't understand how it is possible to find GTA4 or any GTA aside from the PC classics as being repetative. Unless you do absolutely nothing for the game aside fro running circles seeing how long you can dodge the cops, but the game is much deeper then that.

GTA4's story is suppose to be the most details and in-depth story ever made by Rockstar games and the GTA series. Plus all the Easter Eggs, Landmark Stunts, Hot Coffee :-[ , and a real time playing environment - Not to mension a hopeful addition of Xbox360 live co-op play, it's just so much for my mind to handle.

It's nice too because GTA4 comes out next week and that's also my last week of work until a 5 day weekend - meaning I don't even have to play "hookie" to enjoi my new game. +1 :)

Oh yeh, I had my GTA San Andreas (PC) full modded to where all the car's matched to racing/drifting/stunnin' cars. Nothin' like rollin around town pulling drive-bys in a Lincoln Navigator on 24'.

I kinda agree. I mean isn't the freedom enough in any other GTA game? If it truly had infinite replay value, why buy another one? Atleast with this GTA there is multiplayer and stuff.

because like all gtas they all offer sumthin different and they have different eater eggs and they are all funny. i personally love gta 3 guy in green that you meet on the street and hes like well i been drinking again lol. then when u puch him hes like i'll drill your a$$. there are gay cops in san andreas lol ut on eof them is like real mean  and he says stuff like after i beat your a$$ im gonna Fock it lol. i was lmao like did he just say that. the freedom to do whatever u want to is the best part. u will never be able to get a greater satisfaction anywhere else. i didnt even go through the game and actually beat it till after about 7 months because i had so much fun messing around. its only repetitive until u find something new to do and in gta theres always something even if it takes work to do it.

I already have the regular copy reserved..

I don't understand what's so special about the special edition....????

If the multiplayer is only on the special edition.. then I'll be pissed..

Anyways, yeah.. I think they should've at least made 2 cities.. because this is going to be the GTA game (from GTA 3 - GTA IV) with the smallest map.. Hopefully, they changed their minds within the last month or 2 and increased the map.. Or if we could download additional maps.. then that'd be freckin sweet!!

I'd rather have a smaller map with more variety in it's locations...That also means less loading times and more stuff on screen. ;)

Is not too big like San Andreas (The Field and Desert zones make it big)  but isn't the same Liberty City from GTA III either...

Good luck with that.. a more reasonable question would be to ask for a discount..

If this game does fail my hopes, then I'll just be selling it for a little lower price to one of my friends, and I'll be getting COD4.

Well it's got a 10 from IGN so chances of it failing are quite low.

More like a true sequel.

I'm not that interested either but will surely rent it once given the chance.
What I love about the other GTAs is the bad stuff, this game's fun factor relies more on the good stuff. ;*))

I feel sorry for the industries now a daze... with all the leaks and everthing - music, games, movies, etc. Crazy. So I guess as long as you still pay amish to own a hard copy after the release, theirs no harm in a little pre-emptive gameplay. Can't say I'm not jealous tho.  >:P

I have it but it's the real thing, not a pirate copy.  I've only played it for a short time but it's obviously brilliant.  I may as well list a few first impressions!

A few things I have noticed: the camera and controls have changed from previous versions, which is quite hard to get used to at first.  The camera is much looser when driving, which means when you turn a corner you can't see where you're going - you need to use the right stick to control the camera and keep it behind you.  For this reason, X is no longer used to accelerate (it's hard to reach while using the right stick) so you use the trigger buttons (L2 and R2 on the PS3) to accelerate and brake.  So right away it feels different.  Also the driving mechanics are more realistic, you can't just accelerate around corners and expect to take them well, you need to use the brake a lot more in this game.

Hand-to-hand combat is a little trickier to use as well, although I haven't played the missions much, maybe this is something you get training in over time.  I found that you have to stand still in order to punch - if you're moving and try to throw a punch you just do a shove, which is pretty annoying.  You also have a dodge button, which is supposed to let you avoid attacks and disarm someone if they have a weapon, but I have yet to get it to work.

Other little things that have changed - I noticed when you get into a police car Vigilante missions aren't available right away - instead you have access to a police database listing crimes in progress, most wanted lists, etc.  None of this is useable at first, as far as I can tell.  Speaking of police, they're everywhere!  Commit any sort of crime, like randomly punching someone in the street, and more than likely you'll be spotted.  It adds to the feeling that you're in a real city with actions having consequences - another example, I found that if you crash at high speeds you're likely to go flying through the windscreen.  This can lead to some spectacular deaths if you crash on an overpass and go flying over the edge!

Let's see - as I say I haven't had much time to play it, what other random things did I notice... well, car explosions are spectacular!  After they blow up they turn into burning wrecks, very realistic.  All the lighting and weather effects are superb as well.  I have noticed framerate issues when there's a lot going on - no worse than in previous GTAs but it was there.  Doesn't detract from the overall experience though - it's clearly fantastic, and I've hardly started it.

I'm liking the feedback to the game.. other than the fact that cops are everywhere.. they should just be at the station, and only some should be outdoors walking and driving around. (Although cops rarely walk.. too much donuts, eh?)

Any news on a pc version, yet?
Title: Re: Grand Theft Auto 4 - 7 Days Countdown
Post by: tunglashor on April 26, 2008, 10:11:00 AM
No news on a PC version yet, but surely it's only a matter of time.

The number of cops can be annoying it's true - however I think it's slightly easier to shake them than in previous games.  When they're after you a flashing circle on the radar indicates the area they're searching - if you get in a car and escape that area then they give up.  Also switching cars can throw them off.

Some other little touches I remembered - if you steal a parked car you generally have to break the window and then hotwire it.  Also running in front of cars to stop them will often lead to you being run down - they're not as quick to stop as in previous games.  It makes running across a busy street a bit more hazardous!

Cool! I'm gonna be killing Niko a lot, I just don't like him don't know why. :P

Plus, In Crackdown, I killed myself more than advance further in the game, Because the character gets into a ragdoll state when blown by an explosion. It's incredibly funny and if that Ragdoll effect is in GTA you bet I'm gonna have fun with it. :DxDie

Ha, yes the physics have definitely been overhauled and it leads to lots of fun situations - for example one time I jacked a car and as I drove off the owner held onto the car and got dragged along behind.  He lasted for quite a while before I shook him off, bumping along and reacting realistically to surfaces and the movement of the car.

By the way I had another play and found the hand-to-hand combat works a lot better if you remember to lock onto your target first! You can then block, dodge, kick and punch, and also do basic combos.  It's still a lot harder than in previous games as the enemy AI is better and also enemies can take a lot more hits.  Also you can take damage while you're in a vehicle - cops can shoot you through the windows etc - so if you're under fire then taking refuge in a car won't help you as much as it used to.  I've found myself dying much more often as a result than in any of the previous games.

One more observation - the more cartoonish elements of the game are missing or less obvious - I'm thinking of stuff like health and police bribe pickups.  There's the odd medikit to be found but in general you go eat or sleep to regain health, and you give police the slip instead of picking up icons.  I haven't seen any hidden packages as such but there are collectibles - for example there are 50 (I think) pigeons around the city for you to exterminate.  Hidden stuff in general seems better hidden than ever so I'm sure there's lots I haven't even noticed yet.

...i paid $64.15 for mine just so u ppl know and thats tax and everything

Grand Theft Auto 4 Retailed Price: $64.15 (after tax)

My copy: Grand Theft Auto 4: "Special" Edition Retailed Price: $89.99 / $96.50 (after tax)

Difference you ask?

Special Edition Includes (Since I'm at work, I got excited and open the box like a 5 year old on X-mas)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-Copy of Grand Theft Auto IV (Xbox360).

-Copy of "The Music of Grand Theft Auto IV" CD including tracks from Busta Rhymes, Prodigy, Mobb Deep, and more (16 tracks) plus rare track "Stand Up Jamrock" by Bob Marley and the Wailers and Son Damien Marley.

-Copy of "The Art of Grand Theft Auto IV" Book includings rare pictures of concept art of Grand Theft Auto, behind the scenes Mo-cap and a miniture tour throught the city of Liberty City.

-Rockstar Logo diecast keychain.

-Rockstar Carry Bag (still unopened, so I don't know how big it is. still working :(

and the finale.....

(Drumroll)

It's all encased in a black lockbox with the GTA IV Logo stamped on it.

 >:-(-| : It matches my Elite perfectly! Aww...  [-O<

...It comes with two keys for people like me who lose everything, so you can stash your game in a box that your little brother can't get into.  :P It could probably fit like 4 or 5 games if you also feel like hiding any other hot new titles.

Why does it feel like the GTA countdown is still going on? 1 and a half more hours to go. Quick do something fun so time and fly for me.

Um.. daniel.. that's why if you go to the more popular cheat sites.. and you go to look up cheats for GTA IV.. right above the phone # cheats it says something like "Warning: Inputting some cheats will affect missions and achievements" .... yeah..

Anyways.. I've put 22 hours into this game.. I'm only 42.6% done... dam this game is long! I mean I like how detailed it is.. but why does it have to be so long?? lol.. I guess to make people entertained longer, eh? The other games were relatively short compared to this one. I beat San Andreas relatively quickly.. lol (maybe because it was a PC version and cheats I was using..  8-} )

This game is still great, otherwise!

I'm I the only one who thinks this game is WAY over-rated. Seriously, I know it's fun and all, BUT IT IS NOT a 10/10. I don't see why people love it so much.

are u kidding me. This game is a 10 out of 10 by far. First of all is the best one out of the gta series whose games were 10 out of 10 mostly so why doesnt it seserve a 10 out of 10. This one so much more fun. I mean others games like ocarina of time got a 10 out of 10 and to tell u the truth it was good but it was boring as crap cuz the boss fights were so easy i didnt even get hit even in the master sword hard mode. Seriously how does it not deserve a 10

I say 11 stars. It's just so detailed plus the freedom to do as you please; watch TV, surf the web, go the the stripclub  :-[

Anyone else give it to codes yet? The helicopter code is the best.

I have only used 1 code.. and that was because I was in dire need of a motorcycle.. because I crashed and was skidding too far.. plus no cars were around.. but that's the only one I used..

I would definitely give this game a 100/10!! WOOT!

Oh, and I know this is kind of a spoiler (so don't read if you want to), but Pegerino (or w/e his name is) is working with Dimitri at some point (after around 60% of the game is completed)... You have a choice of getting revenge on Dimitri over cash.. don't make the dumbest mistake I did... get revenge on Dimitri.. you'll regret taking the cash.. trust me..

Oh, and multiplayer is real fun.. I'm just sad that it's not like where you go online in games like Call of Duty.. you can't really play with anyone.. only your friends.. so.. stock up on a lot of friends if you want to play in multiplayer...

i went into an ally lol and did the helicopter cheat then the helicopter appeared stuck the building. The tail of the copter was sticking so i tried jumping at it and it let me grab on and the whole copter flew out the wall and blew up with me on it lol. It almost killed me. Another time i did the nrg900 cheat to get that fast bike but when it appeared it was floating in mid air. I jumped up a ledge and grabbed on to it but it wouldnt come down. I dropped and shot at it and the bike fell on me and killed me.

I don't have the game so can anybody tell me how it differs from GTA:SA, besides the graphics.
Does it have the weight system, and dress system like in GTA:SA?
Title: Re: Grand Theft Auto 4 - Official Discussion Thread

I don't have the game either...
But a friend of mine have it and the most easy thing to spot on this game is the realism on the game.

No more bulletproof guy, no more cool weapons (Gattling gun, flamethrower and others...) Just a rocket launcher with max capacity of 8 shots.

No amazing vehicles like tank to name an example...

That's some stuff they have changed on this game.

Oh...
And also.
Is a new and fresh start on the series so...

GTA III, VC and SA events never happened on this new plot.

Does it have the weight system, and dress system like in GTA:SA?

As far as I know for the first one...
No.

Don't know or haven't asked anything about clothes change on this game to my friend.

No weight system (I think that was a weird system anyways.. but it was more realistic).. actually Niko looks kind of heavy in this game after having him try on some jackets.. I was like... wtf.. d@m... lol.

You still can't knock over a tree, but you can surely still knock over a pole...  ~X(

Yeah, I just got the game today and it is OMG. At first I was having trouble with the new game engine, because I've been so used to the typical engine used in the ps2 GTA games that I memorized it. Lol, the first time I used a gun, I got shot down. I like the fighting system A LOT better though, like the typical punches, and then the option to kick the opponent in the nads. Also, I like how you can just run into stores without loading screens. The graphics are probably some of the best, the only thing I don't like is how dark it is. Like some times it's so dark I can't see a thing. I like the new collision detection though, like if you knock down a street light, the light will fall off and well you get the picture. Also Another cool thing is, you can just hold up somebody in a car, and they will either try to speed up, or let you have the vehicle. I remembered one time, I crashed up a car pretty bad, and I was having trouble starting it. I thought the engine died on me entirely until 2 minutes later. Another thing I like is the GPS tracking system.

The game is just very realistic and sweet . Although the swimming isn't as in depth as it was in GTA:SA, but it's good that you can swim. The amount of detail put into the game was awesome.
I'm glad they but the song "Edge of Seventeen" by Stevie Nicks in.  ;D BTW I have the ps3 version, so if anybody wants to play me online, just pm me.

d@m..... why ps3... why????? Well.. the good news for you is that they made a patch of some sort for the ps3 version.. It automatically downloads when you load the game... so I guess that's good.. but it's still not as great as the XBOX 360 version!! Using XBOX Live with the game is SWEEET!

People need to start adding me on XBOX Live, because I've already beaten the game.. and there's not much to do afterwards except to do all of the achievements.... woho....   (:|
I want to multi-play!!

My gamertag name is the same as this one....... ATICE...  ;D

So.. start adding me people...
The reason I got the ps3 version is simply because I hate xbox live. I think Bill Gates should have his nails ripped out for making people pay to play all games online.
I bought a subscription for several months last year, and only used it for a week. If you're somebody as busy as I am, you're not going to have time to use up all of a 3 month subscription. You're probably not even going to have enough time to play for a 1 month subscription if you're as busy as I am. So I'm not going to pay for online services, which I'm not getting my money worth. I just wait around until I see trials for Gold, that's the way I've been doing it up until now, and it seems to be pretty cost effective so far.

The one thing I really hate about GTA4 is, how dark everything is.
I've failed a mission 4 times because the person I was stalking kept walking in these pitch black areas where I couldn't see a damn thing. I mean, I wish they would just give me a flashlight or night vision goggles, it's ridiculous, oh and this happened during day time, so most of Liberty City is at it's darkest, even during sunny days. The high beams on cars help, but if your on your feet, then you're screwed.

My favorite weapon in the game is the pump action shotgun. I get no more joy then being in a gunfight, acting like the terminator, and running up through a place killing every enemy in the vicinity.

That sounds good. I'm still playing story mode so I can unlock the other islands.

If you go to start, and go to display.. you can increase the brightness and contrast so you can see better... plus.. that's one of the main thing's I hate about ps3.. the screen is so much darker when using the ps3 system..

Actually, I saw a video on gametrailers comparing the two, and I really couldn't tell the difference. Gametrailers comparisons use the same tv, same contrast and everything, so I'm sure it's not just the ps3 version.

Edit: I increased the brightness and contrast just as you said, and it works perfectly. I've gotten a bit further in the game so I'm now in Manhattan.  ;D

Also how do you get gloves? I've seen some pictures where he's wearing gloves, but I haven't found any at the clothes shops. If Rockstar makes a series with GTA4 like they did with GTA3, I hope a lot of things from GTA3:SA return, such as hair cuts, underwater swimming, a lot of weapons. I like the new targetting system, it reminds me a little bit of Resident Evil 4, except with the ability to lock on to targets.

@donaldb22: How do you get a knife? I haven't found any blunt objects in the entire game except for a baseball bat.

i fought somebody and got it
I found a knife in the back of the mcreary house.
Also has anybody noticed the Terminator 2 reference yet?
There's a mission called "I need your clothes, your boots, and your motorcycle."

I died laughing when I saw that.  :D

I just wish you had Arnolds clothes and bike from T2 though. Then the mission would have been perfect.

The only thing I wish GTA4 really had besides swimming, would be the ability to use shotgun while on the bike.

Here's a list of references.
http://www.nextgenboards.com/vb/grand-theft-auto-4-discussion/22339-all-references-gta4.html

Edit:
I just beat the story mode.
I wish they had a third ending where both Kate and Roman live.
I beat the game wearing Claude Speed's clothes (the guy in GTA3), which is cool because GTA3 is the first GTA game I played.

There's an easy to find easter egg in the statue of liberty, but you need a chopper to get to it.

I really hate the ending choice they gave the main character, because in both endings, Niko turns emo and blames himself for everything, and says he has nobody. I only played Online once, and I just played the free roaming version. I kind of wish it was a co-op story mode or something. Lol, and if you make your online character a girl, everybody says "he", or "him".

I love how more advanced this game is though.
I remember I pushed this guy in times square, and he punched me, then the police arrested him.  :D

lol. Sounds like a random civilian, I know there's some civilians that say "look it's your friendly neibor oh never mind", it's obviously a reference to the Spiderman games since they take place in NYC.

I really enjoy the physics engine in the game. If you shoot a rocket right where somebody is standing, they will literally be flying.
Hmm. I wonder if you can slash tires with the knife.  >:D
