Swine Flu Outbreak
« on: April 27, 2009, 04:02:49 PM »
This is important so im posting it here, plz read, look for more info, let more people know and dont panic

i live in mexico city most of the week and i can give ya guys some numbers if u want

about 1790 people suspected of being infected, 173 confirmed to have swine flu, 100 or so dead so far with about 20 confirmed to have died from this virus,  numbers arent THAT big when mexico city has about 10 million people alone but i guess its how easily it can be transmitted, a simple sneeze and u are f**ked thats why they are being so careful with so small numbers

how to prevent it well its pretty much common sense, avoid crouds, be very clean, mask (they kinda help) etc, pretty much what you would do to prevent a flu really

symthoms: high sudden fever (39 C or so), cof, muccus, chest pain, irritated eyes and some others, if u get a flu its a good idea to see a doctor here in mexico

from what ive heard its just like 5 cases confirmed in the USA and none died (altough the disease itself apparenly came from the USA), most healed already nothing to get crazy about but just to give u guys an idea on how fast it is here one day they said people were getting sick, next day (litteraly) 10 people died, next day there is no school in mexico city, next day 20 dead and over 1000 possibly sick, next day (today) no classes in the entire country and 173 confirmed sick people a full stop is being considered so u guys up there or wheerever u live just be a lil more careful and this isnt happeneing just to poor people with no access to good doctors or whatever, there is no profile on the 20 dead so far all ages all socio-economic levels (mexicos health system is nowhere near as good as eurpoe or USA of course, the worst scenario will be here)

and its not the diesease itself tha kills u it usually turns into neumonia and then u MIGHT die, not that big of a chance still, u will most likely heal with good treatment

There were some confirmed cases here in NYC as well. Some students who were on a trip to Mexico came back and a bunch of them were sick a day later. I think one student died, but I need to double-check (heard it briefly over the weekend). Yep, everyone be careful and stay clean.

Thanks for the post Vyn, and the follow up Goenitz and Sabaki. Travel in and out of Mexico is being heavily regulated right now and there are reported cases in the United States as well although the symptoms are less severe here since it's being passed through people now rather than from the original source.

Be clean, take care, pray for those in the line of danger if you feel it will help.

researchers from all over the world are on it but nothing confirmed so far, the only sure thing is that its indeed new

still to confirm: it came from the pigs, it came from the USA, its transmitted from person to person

Good luck riding that situation out man, that's intense. From what I've read its a similar disease to the one that wiped out 40% of the population in the early 1900s. Guess we were due for another epidemic. Least its not ebola though #:-S.

as if the economic recession wasn't bad enough....

the worst part is that all the deaths related to this outbreak happened here in Mexico.  :(

the company where i work is taking pretty extreme measures related to the outbreak. several employees who were sick in some way were all sent home early

I cant afford to get sick. Like my grandmother says: "cover yourself with the blood and say your psalm before you leave the house." What that means is to pray and quote Psalm 91 before going into the world. There is alot of stuff that can hurt and harm a person and you might see not see the next day. Be safe everyone.

God Bless,

it could have been that a stronger variety of the virus that causes the desease was located in mexico(or maybe it lacked correct medical treatment in time). In USA,probably, they were a little more prepared since they heard the news i guess :-??

Advice:get vaccinated against the regular flu as a precaution

Viruses mutate. Fast. So what their experiencing in Mexico city is likely a lot more dangerous than what those of us in the US had to deal with.

Also if the disease originated in in the US, many of us might have already developed antibodies against it since we were likely exposed to it in our daily helping of bacon.

This isn't like the bird flu though. Pig flu is a lot less dangerous than the bird flu is potentially. Bird flu causes the immune system to attack the body so the old and weak actually have a higher survival rate.

Sorry for the bad news, but a vaccine against regual flu doesnt wor at all, since it a totally diferent virus.... its supposed its a virus from the pigs, but its only a supposition...its not 100% sure that that is the origin of the virus

We just so happen to have a biologist in the house, so let me clarify this a little bit. Swine Flu in general is a virus that originated in pigs. Viruses are capable of swapping DNA with other viruses they encounter, thereby gaining some of their traits and allowing them to infect multiple species (called a "transgenic" virus). This particular bug contains DNA from human, pig, and bird flu viruses. This is a natural process, so don't get too caught up in the bio-terrorism conspiracy theories that are starting to circulate.

The really weird thing about this one is that so far there have been no pigs found anywhere in Mexico carrying this particular virus. In short, we don't know where this virus actually originated from just yet or how it is being spread. In most outbreaks like this, it can be weeks or even months before those details are known for certain. For more details, try here:
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hROQeIs-igcvLYIjF4rOb36RMgpgD97ROAH80

Another weird thing is that most of the severe cases seem to be in people who are in there 20s, 30s, and 40s. Younger people seem to have better defense against this for some reason. Also, most current anti-viral meds seem to be useless against this.

For now, if you are in an area where infections have been reported the best thing to do is to keep your hands clean and limit physical contact with other people. Using hand sanitizers and similar things is also a good idea. If you start feeling sick, stay home and rest. Most people who've caught this have recovered, as long as they take care of themselves.

Yea im in virginia. Im sick but im not gonna go straight to the asumption that its the swine flu. I usually get sick during the spring/early summer. But it could also be my allergies as I have not been on my allergy med for well over 4 months. In short im not gonna worry im  just gonna do what I usually do when I get sick and that is rest, drink lots of fluids, and until it gets bad use over the counter cold/flu meds.

Well here in south texas we already have some people that have been confirmed to have the swine flu.

All we can do is wait for it to pass and try to stay as clean as possible.
