Problem with Rise of Nations

Game crashes when installation says "Updating system configuration" or something like that, files are copied and everything but there's no Start group folder and when I try to run it from Windows Explorer I get "Install files from game CD".

Why does that happen and how do I solve it?

O.K., I'm even more puzzled right now. After a lot of installing and re-installing it finally got to work, however I don't know how that was possible. What could have happened? :-??
