Hello Guys, I am here to show a project me and Zvitor were working: Battle Stormer Classics

The project gameplay is very simple, far more based on platform games rather than fighting games:

• one round, no defense and no auto turn
• Two attack buttons and one special
• Some interactive backgrounds (platforms, items, breakable objects, etc.)
• Interactive lifebars, which reacts when the player was hit
• Non-playable bosses
• Characters from 16-bit systems or more

This version 2.0 features:
• 22 playable characters
• 25+ bosses / non-playable characters
• 43+ stages
• Story
• Compatible with newer Windows versions
• Non-moleboxed content
• Bonus Stage
• Interactive stage
• Stage Fatality

This project was born of a divergence of ideas during the process of project development Nostalgia Super Wars, from MDI. Zvitor and I had some ideas that were not compatible with that project but were thinking that would work out.

After some attempts, Zvitor decided to leave the previous project and suggested that we have our own design, which I readily supported. The characters made for that project are still available in the previous project (is up to the MDI to use them or not). I still am part of that project, but this will be my focus now.

So is how all this was born. We thanks MDI for the great inspiration:)

GAMEPLAY

The gameplay is very simple project, far more based on plataform games rather than fighting games:

- one round, no defense and no auto turn
- Two attack buttons and 1 special
- Some interactive backgrounds (platforms, items, breakable objects, etc.)
- Interactive lifebars, which reacts when the player was hit

ROSTER


We do not decide the characters yet, but we want to focus more on characters from platform games than shooting Characters from . We are accepting suggestions, since some rules are followed:

- Characters from 16-bit systems or more
- No super deformed characters (big head, for example) or too cartoonish characters
- The characters must fit into the size limit of the image below:

Minor characters (or larger) will be accepted  provided they are not human (such as animals, monsters, robots, etc.) or characters that are actually smaller than normal, such as the case of Mega man. Bosses are not affected by this rule.

The main goal is to be retro, so we will mix some sources from many games

That's so damn too awesome! I've never liked using small characters for Mugen, but for this one, it looks entirely excellent! By the look of it.

Edit: I modified Link's sprites to somewhat fit the style, if you're interested. I could edit the rest of his sprites. I could also try some resizing and redrawing and see where that goes, since he's a little short...

link is just too small...

For me, Link is a good idea, and we can edit for make him bigger.
Why not ? I like Nintendo characters.

I think Link could be a have a taller height. He doesn't have to have the same height as Wolvie but a little shorter than that. I think it's better we have Link a little taller from that sprite (Kriven's shown sprite of Link), and a little shorter than Wolverine. The height size looks like it's from NES.

I guess so (mentioning the height). But looks okay. Almost taller as Wolverine (I mean). I don't know how tall they are between Wolvie and Link. If you guys don't want to work on Link, then that's fine.

Both. I think we don't need to make an AI for normal chars, because since the game is set to hard the AI is already a bit smart in some cases.

I agree. The code isn't hard, it just can make some bugs sometimes. But the original creator is fixing it.

I need to fix some things in some chars and finish the options screen to release the beta (8 chars, I think).
Do anyone have any idea for the options screen?

yo bro O, this is looking totally friggin good man! :thumbsup: i really like the character choices big time you guys are putting in. If i could make a suggestion for a character  i would want....your Avatar O! lol. i am a huge jin Satome fan and if could ever be put in then definetly a plus. lol. but to have some cool nostalgia type characters , depends if there are some cool sprites of old nes Ninja Gaiden Ryu around anywhere. hopefully those 2 dont count as super hero's ( comics wise). You always need a ninja somewhere ready to sneak up and slice someone ...other than Batman who is a super hero tech ninja. respects Batman. lol.

Those spikeballs are cool!! :thumbsup: Though maybe bit more random positions for them, in video it looked like they trying to punish Violator ;*)) And they are probably hard to dodge as they are now, maybe 1/4 of spikeball should be shown for a second or two on the top of the stage before falling. :-??

the ring sound is when you reach 1 level of power.

The spiked ball position are random, but there are two spiked balls, so you may have the impression that is chasing violator

Yeah, but the main char from that game is kinda boring.

We are finshing the things to be able to release the beta on the next Sunday.
Zvitor's list (5 playable chars) is already closed and he is finishing the last char, Fang, which were redone from the scratch.

Hmm groovey. haha yeh i kinda figured you say something about the size...eh aw well if the size was good i think you guys would have made great use of those two ninjas in the game...

but wait..wasnt it you that did (or was trying to) a Nes vs game? cant remember :(|). maybe it would be cool to do a new VS game for NES and maybe using those ninjas and various other characters from games simular to that. probably would have been cool to see NES bionic commando in something like that too...but then again i guess you moved on from NES projects then :-??

Great to see some BSC progress! Stage foreground and background are fitting well :thumbsup: Minor issue there - shadow, light source is somewhere at viewer's point so shadow needs to be behind chars, not in-front of then :-??

About the next release, it will take a while. ZVitor is resting and I having some real changes at RL, so I can't say when I will release the new version.

Something I was thinking is to boost the project somehow. And I had two ideas:

1) to add itens, which could give you more power, or more defense, regain health, etc. I just can't think in which sprite to use to WHO will give it. I don't want to use the guys from Samurai Shodown, but the logic is the same

2) to add a Desperate move, which wold consume the whole bar and/or need low life. And probabilly, this could be used just ONE time each battle

Hmmm, hard question. They have arms transforming into giant hammers, horns grow out of head, giant legs, etc. if you mean that, but... Well, you may say they are mutants with that morphing powers and they look nothing like Looney Tunes characters, they are realistic looking(I'd probably said same about TMNT, hmmm)...
In their case I wish dilemma would be solved with decision to put them in, 'coz they are too cool to not be in :cool

I played with batman, luke and cap.america. I think that you need to add more basics attacks. one for each buttons(4 minimum) to have the chars more playable.

Alright guys, I have some plans for this game and, if everything goes well, I will be working on it again after the beta release of our Avengers Game (OpenBOR).

I have some ideas and I want to share with you guys to get some feedback:

Random item giver NPC - A NPC which comes to the screen (flying or not), throws an item (some can be hittable for giving itens, instead of just throws) and goes away.

- Item options: a bomb (can damage both player and bosses), a food (restore health) and a energy tank (gives a little power to you). A temporary shield could be done too.

Problems: none, I just need to have time to code it.

- Character options: Flitop from Mega Man, those things which give you weapons on Contra, the flying robot from Gunstar Heroes

• Hyper moves/Desesperation moves
- A move which could be done only with low health AND a full power bar, which can turn the tides on a battle.

problems: not all chars have sprites for that, so we would need to edit it. Plus, my idea was to make a low health only move, not including a power bar meter. But this could be too cheap. Maybe a time limit over instead?

None offense taken. I see, he indeed have jump with spinning spear and projectile I never saw Imoto used anywhere + invincible palette. Though mine still have darkening before lighting magic and some bonus enemies :P Use both. I'm still very happy to see you reanimating my fav project :O*D

But flame-breathing drunkard tanuki throwing bottles with sake(or maybe they are emptied before thrown, that's more logical), yes, it's good.
As about droppable items most common are: food, bomb, poison, energy potion, damage up, damage down, slow, shield, confusion(i.e. left is right, up is down, etc.). Could be items that restrict from jumping, using specials, using supers.

First, Happy New Year to everyone.

Second, in 2014 we (me and Zvitor) plan to release a new version of this game, with some cool additions.
One char that people requested to me, over and over (just loses to Sonic and Mario) is Goku. The the problem, always, was the size and I never found a good sized Goku to use on the game, with good animation.

Then my friend Omega shows me this Goku, from the PSX game  Dragon Ball Z: Idainaru Dragon Ball Densetsu which have an almost perfect size:

I will downsize Goku to 95% by code, so the details aren't lost on the process.

About Sonic...well, I always was AGAINST him, because his cartoon nature. But this question was in my head since the first day: if I have Sonic enemies, why I can't have Sonic himself? Judging by the size, Sonic won't be a problem, since he is not a human (and seeing him in action in Capcom vs The World makes me wonder). Mario, for example, would be totally out of question.

So, what do you think? Would be Sonic a good addition?

But I would stop there, with only Sonic. No other super deformed char. (Maybe TwinBee)

I am happy that the Goku i suggested worked for you since you were actually going to use the DS version for Goku wich isn't bad. Thisone is just more classic and fits better in game.

I say yes about Sonic also. He is indeed good in size and all. If you use enemies from a certain game, i suggest you to add it's hero too but, since your game uses differences it won't be a big problem for sure. It depends on the character and it's game. Super Mario is in way too much games. Not having him isn't a big deal.

I have seen you using the first Boss from Magic Sword and that gave me the idea to rip it's playable character called The Brave One. With some sizing and all, he could fit in game if interested.

I was really avoiding non-standard sized chars, like SD chars, but Megaman (specially the classic serie) IS wall smaller than a normal char, so I don't see a problem with that. The same will work for Sonic: I can't make Sonic as tall as Batman.

Some news about the game.

==== MECHANICS ====
One of the things I've changed on this project is that now it works only as a boss rush. This means no more Versus, team versus or Survivor matches. Now there is only Arcade, Team Arcade and Team Co-op.

With this, you don't even face the playable characters anymore - only the bosses. This gives me more freedom to code the bosses and gives me less work. The game never were planned to work as a normal mugen anyway.

New lifebars were made by Exelord  (WIP).

And them were moved to the bottom area, as many feedback had suggested. This gives more room to the fight itself.

ExeLord helped me (again) in editing some hit sprites, so Hayabusa will be joining the game.

Since I am more a Sega guy, I never played the original game too much. So, if anyone wants to contribute with ideas for him (specially about the magic/ninja skills), go ahead.

What I have in mind for him:
A- Sword attack
B- Magic select (from a menu, like Fang)
C- Magic use

Skills:
- Wall climb
- Attack grom wall climb

Magics:
• "Windmill Throwing Stars" which move back and forth like boomerangs,
• "Fire Dragon Balls" which launch fireballs downward at an angle,
• "Fire Wheel Art" which launches fireballs upward at an angle,
• "Invincible Fire Wheel" that forms a series of rotating of fireballs around Ryu
• "Vacuum Wave Art" which hurls vacuum blades above and below Ryu simultaneously.

A little more progress with this game:

• Game HUD is almost done. I am still testing some sizes and positions.
• The play area looks cleaner than before, with more free room to play. I decided to not use a super jump camera, to avoid make the screen to move.
• Batman's stage were remade. Now you start in the center of the playfield, the back alley has a cool delta (split in many parts, to give a depth feeling) and some new animations.

I will need to edit every stage on the game, to move the camera upward to open room for the new HUD. But I managed to find a trick where I just need to change one value and it is done (with few exceptions).

Though MDI never released his game, I wonder if he cares about it at all and sealed resources... I really liked Run Saber's female character and there was Actraiser's protagonist and I remember ripping BlackThorne's protagonist back than... It's kinda like sitting on basket of food until it rot instead of eating by self or giving to others... :-?? Maybe he'll give permission to use all that was done since lot of time passed since then and it'll be great to use those rather than let all effort go to waste :-??

Bumping the topic a bit with some info:

- Exelord managed to talk with MDI. So we are allowed to use anything we wanted to from that project.
This doesn't means I will use everything or, better saying, will use everything right now.

- A new friend, and a good coder, will be joining the party. I hope to be posting more news soon :)

- I have plans to release a "finished" version of this game this year (so I can work on it again later, adding more stuff).

In 2019, I will be celebrating 20 years of Mugen. So I want to celebrate by finishing a lot of unfinished stuff, including this project and a lot of unreleased stuff.

Don't forget there was Cyclops from X-Men(don't remember exact game, the one in blue suit with white stripes) and protagonists from Black Thorne and Musya. Even though it was me, who ripped last two I'm most interested in a girl from Run Saber, Sheena and Musya's protagonist, Imoto. But I guess Sheena isn't happening :| maybe Allen?

From Magma's suggestions Yuko is must have(and can use her abilities from SNES game too) and I also like Elta and Sadler :-??

Besides those I'd limit my suggestions to Abel from Majyuuou https://www.spriters-resource.com/snes/majyuuoukingofdemons/ Would be interesting character. Can have unique mechanic being with low amount of health, die and reborn as selected demon form, maybe, if possible...

I was playing with Sheen yesterday but she will need to be redone almost from the ground up, because I need to  organize both her codes and animation files. Probably, the same will have to be done with Hagane too.

Also, this boss character will be added too and since he is not meant to be playable, he just need some minor work

I decided to review this old project - Battle Stormer Classics - and finish it, so I can move to new projects. 
The game now works as a Boss Rush only - no versus fights between players, and this play way better.

I've improved somethings like damages, AI, fonts, etc. And now it works on newer Windows versions (the last version works only up to Windows 7).

I am just polishing some stuff so I can update it in some days (I hope, lol).

Something I've always wanted to add on the game: healing items.
They spawn randomly every time you hit a boss, but with a low chance and a limit of 2 at same time:

- Power Up
- Life Up
- Power and Life up

All of them uses the graphics and sounds from my Avengers game :)

I had a crazy idea on how to implement the TMNT on BSC:

Make the 4 turtles to act as one. You Control Leonardo, and the other 3 are ai controlled entities.
To Ballance It a bit, all 4 share the same life bar - so any hit to any turtle will reduce your health.

What if you could play with Robotnik/Eggman and be the hero of the story?

Changing the character selection setting, we can play with the "Death Egg Robot", the final boss of the game "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" on the Sega Genesis, released in 1992.

But it's a lot harder than it looks: I had to cut the several times I died, especially against the final boss. Despite being powerful, he can't turn to change sides and is a giant hitbox :)

Follow this journey, as we pass through the universes of Batman, Castlevania, Altered Beast and others.

Playing Team Arcade mode with Moran (Castlevania Ressurection) and Fang (Contra Hardcops) in version 2.1 that will be released soon.


Moran is one of those characters that has a tool for every situation and can be overpowered against some bosses, but have a lot of difficulty against others - I had to record this video a few times until I got used to his weaknesses.

The next version should be out by the end of this month.

Battle Stormer Classics is a oldschool game, on a boss rush mode, featuring classics chars from classic games. The project gameplay is very simple, far more based on plataform games rather than fighting games
