where can you check on how good your graphics card is?

Speaking of graphics cards... I have an NVIDIA Geforce MX 4000 (sucks) and want to update, but I'm afraid to do it because last time we did it on an older PC and some months later the motherboard burned and the PC went FUBAR.
These are my specs:

Motherboard: ASRock P4VM800
Processor: Intel Celeron 2.53 Ghz, 512 MB RAM
OS: Windows XP SP 2

(That's what comes out when I go to My PC - Properties)

I got some questions:

1 -Why could that have happened?
2 - What graphics card should I get?
3 - Looking over the Internet I saw a model which caught my eye: NVIDIA Geforce 8600 GTS. Is it compatible with my PC? (Don't give me the typical "ask in a store" because I ask here for a reason.)

well that intel celeron processor is gonna kill you when it comes to gaming on pc. you also need 1 gig of ram or more for most games after 2004. how your motherboard burned up well that I do not know, maybe you needed a heat sink and a better fan. oh and yeah that is a good graphics card.

No hope for me then. A year's waiting silently for my birthday to ask a videocard and being told no are now going straight to toilet.
