I never thought I would be posting a WIP, but here goes nothing. A couple days ago I ran across a nice spriting tutorial by Spidermew, and I sprited my first ever sprite (of Fireman from the Mega Man series), which I posted over in the Sprites Section. After that I tried spriting my first superhero, Red Tornado. My first attempt was posted on the Sprites section as well. Lets just say it didn't look as good as I thought it did, and I dropped it for another base, but still wanted to attempt the Red Tornado. So I went at it again, and came up with this:

Thanks for the compliment, and I am fairly sure I may have to ask for help at some point. Also, thanks for the no white background version, I went ahead and updated the first post with that one.

We have a Wip going on Reddy at the moment as Well, however the design is somewhat differant. Maybe we could colaborate efforts as I think it would be easier to edit our sprites than it would a base from scratch.
The only thing I dont like is that you have yellow gloves, and boots on which I think takes away from his look since Reddy has rarely ever worn standard boots or gloves. Ours looks like this

alexziq does bring up a good point . He rarely had yellow gloves & boots . Just change them to red & put the lines on top .
Now as for his next idea . I would have to disagree . If you have a better edit with what you are working on . Why backtrack & try to fix something broken to make it almost as good as yours ?
I say keep spriting from whatever base you are using & don't play around with this . Because your stance looks great . Maybe use the coding from Red Tornado with added moves . But , 100% stick with your sprite style .

I actualy prefer jlg's look over jasons. It seems cleaner. No offence intended.

The reason I went for the yellow gloves and boots was I liked the look as I was basing my character off of this:

Thanks for the vote of confidence on the stance and sprite style, I sincerely appreciate it.
And as far as the boot/glove thing, I will resprite my main stance and see what everyone likes better, and go from there.

Alright, seeings how the the way the Red Tornado usually looks and the way I made him differ, I decided to try a compromise, you guys can decide which you like the best, then I will continue my spriting.

I think option 2 show more of your sprites better....so i you should go with that one :-??

I tend to agree on the super hero vibe, as evident by me going with gloves and boots originally, but I have to admit, after changing the boots/gloves, and the cape I kinda am leaning toward #2 as well. Also changing it let me see minute details that needed fixed which I am working on now. I just hope this character doesn't become too much for me to be able to do. 1 sprite at a time i guess. LOL.

Actually I am working on that now, as the original picture I was using to go off of had him without the face part of the cape, So now I am just trying to figure out how to sprite it (not that easy for me). Also am reworking muscle structure as I felt too much of the original base was showing through.

you should make it so you can swich between the 2 with just a change of the palette.
You'd do that by making the extra yellow parts on the gloves and boots a weird color that isnt in the rest of him, like orange or green

I may try to work that in later, as for now I think I am just going to work on getting him sprited now that I have changed him from the original. I am working on updating the sprites I have completed. Also I have to go sprite hunting after I get the stance and basic stuff down because I don't think I am good enough to get the moves how I want them. But that is a bit down the road.

Well let me know of you want to full blown make him a WIP, like I said ours is already bald, and red. Seems like its silly to have 2 wips, but thats okay. Were pretty reliable to finish projects either way.

Now that I seen this up close & personal my opinion has changed on your sprites ....
They look even better than I first thought !

Maybe just add another shade of blue , so you can have more shading on the cape for when you see more of it on certain sprites you will be making . Kind of like you shaded the yellow & red . Nice job , man .

Thanks man, I will post and updated version of the stance, and I am glad you liked everything once you seen it in more detail. I never expected to get this good of feedback! I will update all three with you additions, and will be sure to give proper credit where it is due.

i like what you are doing....but i think you should add more shadding to the legs...and add a little work on the head...but with that it will look impressive ^^

I may try to reshade the legs, but I really don't see the need for it, and I will be leaving the head likely the way it is, as I really like the way it turned out, but thank you for your input.
Also, DARKTALBAIN was kind enough to extend the cape to come around Red T's head as it is in the comics, and I went ahead and updated my wip to include his contributions. I am still debating on including the connecting yellow lines that connects the yellow portion of his waste to that of his boots. (I must remember that I do have to sprite everything, LOL), I may also decide again the head portion of the cape has to go as well just to kind of stay true to the original designs I had, but time will tell what I choose to do. But here is the update with the head part of the cape *was also added to the first page of post*:

Bro , this looks awesome . Let me mention one thing to you . Yes I agree it is a pain spriting those extra details at times , especially when the character is moving . But you do seem to have a knack for it . The stance looks great & you even made the head piece move . Now I know from experience about details . Look at my Medieval Spawn WIP , chains , spikes , skulls , & capes . It's tough at times . But you have a great thing here , go the extra mile & do all the details . It's the little added details that make the characters so much better . :thumbsup:

Thanks again, the reassurance goes a long way, let me tell you. I will work later at getting the yellow detail in, and see if I like it, trying to finish up the stances so I can move back on to spriting everything else. LOL

But in all reality, there wasn't much for a stance you can really do with an android. It wasn't something I decided "oh well this android is going to breathe", it was more like, " his stance is gonna look like crap if he doesn't, and I am not wanting him to be a flying only character, so I was left with the breathing part, and any who, the Red Tornado did take on human alter ego appearance, so it isn't too far of a stretch that the breathing could be a sub-routine for his human alter ego appeance (needs to still look human)

Update, after running into issues with the custom portions of the cape itself, I am updating my design to incorporate more of an existing cape templete (likely Doom's Cape, possibly Magnetos), and then will just tweak the cape, updated cape will be posted likely in the next day or so, also just an update, will begin spriting moves and such likely by the end of the week.
Main stance is finished minus the cape --
Crouching - Almost completed.
Walking - still having issues with the looks of the original bases and lining up (may have to frankensprite another walking base in to the mix to get it to line up properly.
I should be posting some animations coming up over the next week or two for feedback.

I haven't made the decision yet. I have just stepped back and started spriting the body minus the cape, and am looking through the other capes. I may just update the cape so it is easier to work with on the other stances.

Alexiq sent me some sprites, but that is all I have recieved. So if the ones he sent are what you are talking about then yes, but if you sent some separate then no, I haven't received anything else.

Do you think he should fly? Your stance is awsome, but it would be cool if we gave him a flight mode with Tornado legs. I have some additional Sprites that may be useful, or we could just add a tornado effect around the legs during flight.

Actually that is something that is on my list of things that I have planned out for him. I am in the process of getting/ripping sounds for him as well. As far as the flight, I haven't really decided how I am going to do it yet, but I do have some ideas in mind (not really going into them right now as some of them I am hoping to be a pleasant surprise for those who are looking forward to that character).

I am not sure about the palette separation, I am just working on making sure the original colors line up first. Also the cape redesign didn't turn out as good as the original so changes will be minimal if at all. And as far as the underrated comment goes, well I feel that it is better to have one original character that not too many people want to work on then having 10 renditions of the same character (ie: Ryu, Ken, Geese, etc.)

and it's good to see people working on the less popular characters. Gives more variety and variety is definitely nice. Btw looking good. can't wait to see him when he's 100% finished.
And wouldn't worry about the pallette's so much. You can always update him later afterall if you choose to. Palettes or not Red Tornado is not a common character so seeing a working one is always cool.

Agreed , I am pretty bored with all the super hyper orochi mega comboliscious akuma's being worked on .

I am still going to try to continue with the project, but I may end up having to go with another base as the Mambo base is giving me a lot of issues with the various stances as the colors aren't lining up very well. I am going to try to make the base work as I have been working with it for a few weeks now, but ultimately I may be forced to switch bases to continue working on the Red Tornado....

Just mix bases. Urin from sf3 is close to the body type.

Checked out the Urien sprite packs, but he is vastly different than the mambo lantern. Cyclops is much closer, so I am going to try to keep working at this, but I probably won't update this again until I have the basics completed.
