A question for playing media files for xbox 360

My regular xbox has decided to act up on me, so now I can't watch my movies that I get online from file sharing and bit torrents. The 360 only plays wmv files, which of course are mainly for "Adult Entertainment" HEH HEH.... Is there a patch somewhere for the 360 to play other media formats such as avi, mpeg, mp4, asf,etc? Thanks for any help :)
