“Zombie” ants fall victim to mind-control fungus

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot/20110310/od_yblog_upshot/zombie-ants-fall-victim-to-mind-control-fungus

"'Zombie ants' may sound like the title of an Ed Wood movie, but, according to National Geographic, they are quite real.

Oddly, there's nothing very zombie-like about the actual ants. It's only when a particular fungus takes over the ant's brain that things get weird.

Once the "stalk of the newfound fungus species Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani infects an ant, the ant gives up control over its own body. After the fungus is in control, it forces the ant to scamper toward "a location ideal for the fungi to grow and spread their spores." Then, it's lights out for the ant. Who knew a fungus could be so diabolical?

These wild discoveries were made by a group in Brazil headed by entomologist David Hughes. National Geographic published a series of pictures of ants that have "lost their minds" to the fungus. You can check out a sample of them below. Not for the squeamish."

IMO, after this discovery, it's only a matter of time until they figure out a way to use this on humans... @-)

yuck and masn that is beyond creepy! also exactly what Manic said , they do look like them!! @^@

i saw a nature show with my nephew a few months back , there is also a kind of weird tiny maggot lookin thingy that digs inside an ants brain and tells it to hang by the edge of a leaf so a bird can pick it up and eat it and then that same bacteria animal grows in the bird who then it tells to escrete it out so it can get ate by a rabbit and then it makes its way somewhere in the rabbit and then spawns more of these bacteria animals and keeps the process going in same exact circles. Friggin Freaky i tell you. I will find the video and post that sucker.  @^@

Mano i specialize in crazy stories bro. its my life blood  i swear. lol. but yo that is a true thing right there. that also maybe where we get the truth serum from, that dang fungi!!!!  you see only the top of the top in CIA and spy undercover espionage and gov coverup peeps got that serum.

if i can get a hold of that fungi ( wearing a full radioactive suit no less) and use my sons chemistry set i got from walmart, maybe i can come up with a formula to make my kids do they chores and keep they rooms clean and make me lunch for work and no telling tall tales to dear old dad.  just would have to get pass the fallout dead thing and friggin dandilion sprout coming from the head and its all good. gonna market the serum too.  call it CROM : Do As I say Spray.
