Zombie "Rogue" Satellite
« on: May 12, 2010, 03:10:18 PM »
Been monitoring this for a lil while now (yahoo news) and its like a Bad B movie scene stirring up to happen and i just chuckled to myself ;*)) :-w...

Hmm, Swine flu, Earth Quakes, Floods, Asteroid zips just in miles of our orbit, Sun changes to new shape, Colder & stranger weather conditions going flip flop, Super space telescope to spot incoming asteroids is destroyed in wierd acccident before launch, New star bigger than the sun is just born leaving scientists stumped & now this one
..

Past details

Outer space has contributed to the cause of many fictional zombie outbreaks, but now its wonders have caused a real one.

Galaxy 15, an earth orbiting communications satellite, recently had its electronic brain fried by a solar flare, leaving it a roaming hulk operating at full power which has abandoned its original path in the heavens, and one which may prey on the signal of another satellite.

Before you start thinking shades of Skynet and looking for the Governator to lead you to safety, the worst scenario merely involves it stealing another piece of space junk’s cable signal or messing with an SES satellite that transmits to Luxembourg.

Presently Galaxy 15 presents no falling hazard to the people of Earth. Various satellite companies are working together to figure out how to rein in the renegade comsat.

For more information on satellites, check out the website for Longmont’s own DigitalGlobe.

And don’t worry about tarnished relationships with Luxembourg leading to a nuclear apocalypse. They don’t have the bomb, and I think I could fit the whole country in my backyard.

Now...

The Latest Update from yahoo news:

Finally, scientists have no idea how to stop a fully powered satellite that has gone rogue and is no longer accepting orders from earth. This so-called "zombie" satellite, known as Galaxy 15 (which carried the SyFy channel), continues along in the Earth's orbit — on a course to interfere with the communications of a fully functioning SES satellite beaming down programming to its customers in Luxembourg. We know, we know: We're just happy it's not us.

In the words of the Demoman- "Thankfully I already don't remember this." I remember reading but this in a science monthly mag (I'm a nerd, I know), and the biggest issue we're gonna have is a collision.

I can't wait for 12/23/10 so I can walk into my college class and laugh at everyone.
