Applying a patch to a character

When looking at some posts, i found that certain characters have patches for them to make them better. Could someone please tell me how i would go about doing this? I don't want to do anything to my characters files before i know what im doing, you know?

....just put the files's patch in the same folder of the character concerned.
 
the files of the patch must to substitute the original files of the char.
