Update on atomicbuster's WIPs
« on: August 29, 2007, 06:10:36 PM »
Hello. I announced my intentions to make 3 chars a while back, but the third (NeoGigas from World Heroes) became too difficult to complete any time soon. I will be focusing on Zangief and Haggar for my first chars.

Haggar progress: I made some new moves for him by changing up existing sprites. I am not a big fan of the Slam Masters 2 Haggar's moves, so I'll use very few frames from that char. I'm very exited about this char's potential.
here are sample moves:
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/HaggarProgress.png

Zangief progress: I am going to incorporate moves that he has in MVC2 and CVS2 by changing existing SF2 sprites. My opinion is that the best Zangief in the "official" videogame world is CVS2 Zangief, with MVC2 a close second, so I will try to include as many features and moves from each incarnation.
here is a comparison to the MVS/CVS version:
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/ZangiefComparisons.png

EDIT: 2-10-09; I've decided to modify this topic to include all my WIPs, since I probably won't be working on these guys as much as I will other characters. This way I don't have to start up new topics.

To Luffy: Thanks for the post. I don't know who kimala is.

To All who read this post: I just read a discussion in a character release thread. Some people have an issue with the idea of "permission to use sprites" and "stolen characters." I'm not going top get into a big discussion, but here's another update to my chars: I could care less if anyone uses/copies/changes anything that I put online. If someone makes a better character than I could by using anything of mine, I consider it a tribute. Thanks.

Another update (for Haggar):

I thought I was making good progress until I tried my WIP in MUGEN and saw that his size was all wrong (smaller than KFM). I resized him in his CNS file and it was still looking all wrong, so I decided to resize his group 0 (standing) PCX files using Photoshop, but it didn't work. I got frustrated and decided to resize the PNG file in Paint, and it STILL looked wrong. By wrong I mean that the pixels were not being resized in proportion. I decided to compare him to a few other chars and see if I could determine where I must have made a mistake. I compared his sprites to KFM, Zangief by masa, and Haggar by mugenmage. Then I realized my mistake: The Haggar I'm using for my base comes from an SNES emulator, not an arcade emulator. BUT I DON'T LIKE THE ARCADE HAGGAR, so after some contemplation I decided to keep my SNES sprite rips, resize them in paint, and simply smooth them over by hand. This means my original beta release date is going to be pushed back a bit from early October to early November. It takes a long time to smooth sprites. It took me an hour just to do this one:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/Haggarsmoothed.png

The left one is the resized PNG, the one in the middle is my work, and the one on the right is mugenmage's. OK. Wish me luck.

Ahhh. Now I remember. And Scorpion is called Astro. Well, I like Slam Masters so after I get the hang of creating my first characters, you may see a number of SM characters showing up. BTW I finally got at least the standing animation correctly sized, smoothed, and on the right x axis.

Hello. It's been a while.
Here's another update:

Zangief: Has movement, normals, damage, sound, 2 original palettes. I started experimenting with throws, but there's nothing really working yet. I'm feeling the temptation to steal very strongly...but I resist.

Haggar: Has movement, normals, grabs, 3 specials, damage, portraits and sound. Almost ready for beta release except for sprites that haven't been smoothed yet. I have decided to release several versions of this character, mostly for my own development as a new creator. I'll begin with a Street Fighter 2 version because I consider SF2 the standard by which characters are measured. After I gain more experience in coding, I'll develop an SFA version, then MVC, then SF3, and finally CVS2.

Pics will be forthcoming.

I've just discovered winkawaks!!    ;D  It's way better than mame, in my opinion. And I found a good rom for SSF2T. Now I don't have to frankensprite Zangief's Banishing Flat. Yay.

This is the REAL Banishing Flat:
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/BFpalette.png

Now I just have to work on the palette. As soon as I polish off the throws and some more coding, I'll get to work on the sounds. He's already a beta in my book (cuz I've played worse). But I'll actually release him when I think he's a much, much better beta. Updates should be a bit more frequent now.

I've just discovered winkawaks!!   :(  Unfortunately, I also realized that editing sprites is very difficult. Thus, I've come to the reality that using existing sprites to make chars is way easier than making your own, or making detailed edits to existing sprites. That being said, my Haggar project is being modified. I realized that the sizes for the SNES sprites were a bit off:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/sprite05.png
http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/sprite10.png

and there's really no way to fix it. The only sprites that are a good (but not great) size are from the CPS1:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc67/atomicbuster/spriteCPS1.png

Therefore, here are the modifications:
1) I'm going to use CPS1 sprites for my Haggar project until I can find a way to resize pics without having them lose resolution.
2) I'm going to keep all my edited sprites and work on them whenever the mood strikes me.
3) I plan to edit the new sprites and make the moves I had in mind for Haggar.

In conclusion, I have the coding and sound, I need to do the sprites and palettes again, I need to fix some bugs, and there's no AI. I guess he's at 60% before beta release.
Damn you winkawaks for opening my eyes to better sprites!!!

Sweet!
So you finally released the Street Fighter II style Haggar!   :w00t:
Just now I checked the website (The Official DrZaius Site for MUGEN) to download the beta version of the character, but when downloaded the character (in fact, I clicked Haggar), somehow that was a character from Fight Fight 3 (Black), and wasn't Haggar...   :(
Where is Haggar?

(EDIT)
Thanks for fixing the link, DrZaius!
Just now I played mugen with SFII style Haggar.  Wow, this character is awesome!  The first thing that I like about this character is he fights just like other characters from Street Fighter II (sounds, speed and moves).  The second thing that I like about this character is that Controlling him is a lot easier than controlling Zangief (I remember Zangief was a weekest character in Street Fighter II).

So I guess there will be more updates, right?  If so, I'm really excited!  Good luck on working on mugen work  %%-

CrossDash:  Thanks man. Yes there will be updates as the sprites are kinda blocky. The only problem is that to smooth out one sprite, it takes at least an hour, makes my eyes sore, and gives me a headache. Like I said on the site, it will be a while. In the mean time, I'm working on another SF2-style char.....

Yes, that's what I meant.

Now that this topic includes all my WIPs, let me tell you about Guy. I've been working on Guy using arcade sprites + Frankensprites. My goal is to make him in SF2 style. And he's mostly done. Thanks to more established creators for giving me coding help.

I want to try to avoid double posting unless it's something very important. If it's not very important, I'll just Edit my previous post.

I made a new big portrait for Haggar for his next update.
