Their resolution isn't so good when compared to how they look in the actual games. And when I try to scale them to 1:1 ratio they become giants but the resolution looks great. Why are all GG characters like this?
-
Their sprites are huge because GG shrinks the character's down to make them look Hi-res.
-
Make your mugen's size 640 x 480, and set doubleres = 1 to doubleres = 4
-
But won't that affect sprites from other games like Capcom or SNK?
-
It will affect them, but very slightly. They will look slightly jagged.
But its well worth the tiny sacrafice for hi-res characters to look as sweet as they do.
And not all guilty gear characters are hi-res like that, there's a few that aren't...

I don't think so. If you want set res to 2 so the edges of characters won't look pixelated. It will look blurry though.

If you set res to 2 it won't show the hi-res characters like they should look. But yes it will slightly blur them so they don't look pixelated.
I say doubleres=4 all the way. no contest. no brainer.

Hmm I did what you guys said but the graphics of the non-GG characters are compromised. And I have way more Non-GG characters than GG characters. So I think I'm just going to put all the GG characters in their own Mugen.

What do you mean by compramised? You must have done it wrong then. In the mugen CFG this is what you have to do in the highlights
[Video Win]
Width = 640
Height = 480
Depth = 16
Stretch = 0
DoubleRes = 4
DXmode = Hardware
VRetrace = 0
BlitMode = Normal
If you look at my vids at my youtube, I'm running it just like that and the characters all look fine...

they look kind of blocky

Ok yes they do... thats what I said before.
Doubleres = 2 smooths them by blurring them a bit.
Doubleres = 4 makes the hi-res characters look right but no smoothing on the regular characters.
My reasoning is this. The high res characters look so much better, and the regular characters don't look bad, just different. Ok slightly not as good, but a few regular characters actually look better that way. I think the doubleres at 4 is the only way to go. But if you don't have that many hires characters, or want to just put them in a different mugen, and keep your doubleres at 2, thats your choice...
-
There is a normal res (as opposed to the larger high-res characters) Millia Rage that was converted...but the name of the author escapes me at the moment... :-[

Yeah that's what I'm going to do. I mean the other characters that are not Guilty Gear look perfect with doublres at 2 so I'll just put the GG characters in a different Mugen.
EDIT: So how many GG characters have been made in normal res? If most of them have been then I'll just download those.

I think it was made by Tuki no Turugi...... or something like that.

My GG characters all look fine. But I play in double res 4, but my video card cleans up my othe characters

The same here.
The appearance quality of the Hi Res GG chars (those by Muteki, EL, Amachi's Sol, Akugatawa's Ky) all look like there real game counterparts.
Basically Double res 4 and 640 X 480 settings give them their best looking quality.
Also, not all GG chars are Hi res... Don't forget the mugen conversions of the FIRST Guilty Gear (PSX).
mainly those from AoAo (GG1 Sol, GG1 Ky, GG1 Justice)
and some other GGX sprite chars are also not Hi Res like
Sol, Jam, and Johnny by AoAo as some examples
-
all of my GG characters are Hi res except for Anji and Testament. The rest of them and even the chick from GG Isuka with the giant key is in hi res
