Title: What is a "hardcore" Gamer?
Post by: -Whiplash- on September 14, 2012, 01:26:19 AM
I assume someone who played video games as their primary hobby and played lots of video games from a variety of consoles was a "hardcore" gamer.

However I think the term refers now to players who only play who only play games for the 360/ps3/PC.

like somehow, because I beat super mario galaxy I'm not hardcore? Or because I play games from other generations?

I'm sorry, I was unaware beating over 230 different videos games made me casual.

Or maybe I'm just wrong....  can someone shed some light on this term and it's definition and use?

EDIT: I read this article and I agree with it: http://thegamershub.net/2011/05/what-is-a-hardcore-gamer/ (http://thegamershub.net/2011/05/what-is-a-hardcore-gamer/)

However I want to know what some people think. Why is it that when I play a game that isn't rated "M" I get looked down upon?

The better question is, why do you even care if someone looks down on you over your choice of video game playing/amount of games played?

'Multiple genres on multiple consoles' was what I thought of before I read your post. If you play ONLY Call of Duty/Gears of War/Halo/etc, you're most definitely NOT a hardcore gamer. Gotta get your Marios, your Zeldas, your Final Fantasies, and so forth in there too.

Because some people are immature idiots, mainly. The second-last game I played was Wario Land: Shake It!. It was awesome. I'm playing Tekken Tag Tournament 2 now. I've owned nine or ten consoles and hundreds of games. Pokémon is awesome too. So's Dead Space. So's Diablo. So's Ratchet & Clank. :)

I actually don't care if someone does that to me. I just want to know why anyone would have such a view in the first place....

To me at least... It makes no sense.

I mean... I really want a "My Video game list" Similier to the "my anime list" thats out there.. but for video games. I think it would be interesting to see what people have played.

i'd say there are 2 types of hardcore gamer,

there's the kind that has no real deffinition, decent skill, lots of games, ect.

and there's the kind that plays cod non-stop and calles everyone a "NoOb",
this type is easyily noted by its lack of skill, tendency to "rage", and having lots of payed content

if you catch my drift

the first type of hardcore gamer may-in-fact be a somewhat casual gamer, with any number of games under their belt from (rough guess) 20 to hundereds,
they may have some arrogence, but rarely to douch-ish levels
basicly i said it in the first (second) sentence "no real deffinition"

Plus I think it is variable. When I play MGS I get DEEP into the story and play it for hours at a time. I discuss them a lot, and even consider the meanings Kojima had while making the games and their various themes.

But often, nowadays, I can only do this in little spurts of time. Maybe a free weekend or something, but in that time I play it a ton. Normally I don't play much, as I don't have the time.
