Title: Palettes: the easy way.
Post by: O Ilusionista on April 03, 2011, 12:13:47 PM
I know that many people already know how to do it, but some people don't.

To make palettes is something so easy, but I will make a quick tutorial:

HOW TO BUILD A PALETTE FROM MANY IMAGES:

1- Grab the Fighter Factory Classic (the anniversary edition) http://www.virtualltek.com/downloads/show/6 (http://www.virtualltek.com/downloads/show/6)

2- Go to TOOLS > Palette Generation

3- Add all the images you need to have a shared palette (its better to NOT add effect images here, just the char images)
and mark "generate optimized palette if exceed 256 colors"

4- Click GENERATE and save it.

5- Open the palette that you made with FFC and seek for the color which all images use as background. On the exemple bellow, its the pure pink Magic Pink, as they call it):

6- Notice that FFC can't guess which color would be used as the background color (and that will be transparent). It's not FFC fault, it's just too difficult (depends too much which image we are using). So, the backround color will be on a wrong position, as we can see here:

7- Hold CTRL and click on the last color (bottom right) and on the desired background color...

...move the cursor AWAY from those colors and right click:

Now its done.

HOW TO APPLY THE PALETTES TO MANY IMAGES IN A SINGLE SHOT:

1- Again, using FFC, click on the Palette tool and add the images using the button at the right and mark "use the same name of the images". This will make the things quick but wil OVERWRITE the images, if you choose the same folder.

2- Now click on the button "Apply the palette on the images".

Now you have all sprites with the proper palette :)

This is one thing that bothers me, and im not sure about others, but look how the colors are unorganized. Personally, I like to make sure the colors match and organize them properly. I start by darkest color to lightest color.
(Ex. Red => Orange)

Im hoping there could be a way to organize them automatically so I wont have to this manually (takes up quite a lot of time...)

To organize the color automatically is harder than you think. We use 3 color values, so it can make it not an easy task.

The new Fighter Factory 3 (private until now) has this feature now.
