Sprite editing in Photoshop CS6
« on: May 31, 2014, 07:43:27 AM »
hi, i used to sprite edit in jasc psp for a decade, and now, im using my macbook only, and i just realized that i can't use PSP in MacBooks, so, theres a lot of tools i don't know how to use properly
if someone can help me out i would love to.

first of all, i can't make color replacement tool work properly, it don't change the color to the color i want, neither make it precise, it has some kind of blur effect around the area i change.

second, is there a way i can use a secondary mouse click in photoshop?to brush, color selection, color replace with the second click?

please give me a light and thank you :D

It's best to start with the right pallet, make sure you've all the colors you'll need already in there.

'Microsoft Paint' is old as dirt, but it's also the most reliable.

Did you uncheck the anti-alias in the tool options ?

Check the tolerance value. I use it and works perfectly.

Yup works perfect, but i've always been using CS3, maybe the tool is a bit different in your version.

Have you tried using layers ? Same effect, much more versatility & control.

Hit ctrl + Shift + N, set opacity at something like 70%, on the new layer color the part you want to select, flatten layers & use the paint bucket (contiguous unchecked) to swap the colors with the final ones (well that's one way to do it, there is another one involving the magic wand tool)

In my opinion in the best/quicker way to do this kind of things, since you can work on every part of the sprite at the same time using different colors on the new layer.

But i need to fo it partially, and safe that will respect the edges
U understand that?
I will try with layers but i guess its not what i need yet
If i fill an outline picture wit colours, it will not be able to do the proper shade with this tool, right?

for exemple, if you do a smart palette, you sometimes need to replace just colors for one part of the sprite, how do you do it in photoshop thats not manually point to point(if its a big area)

Select whole area you need to change colors in with any selection tool, be it rectangle selection or any lasso tool then use bucket with "Contiguous" option disabled(means that not only connected pixels of same color will be changed to needed color), it will replace color only in selection. Note that for pixel graphics "Anti-alias" should be also disabled for selection tools and 0 px "Feather".

Well i think that the technique i explained is the best for what you want to do, but it might be easier to explain with pictures :

1. Okay here we have a clean sprite of Samurai, i need to add the white parts of his outfit to finish the edit.

2. Here i hit Ctrl + Shift + N, to create a new layer. No colors & 55% Opacity.

3. Draw in plain colors the parts that you want to recolor. Used blue for white parts, and green for a part i wanted to smart palette.

4. (This is what you actually see while doing step 3) Now hit Ctrl + E, to merge the two layers.

5. With the paint bucket, contigous unchecked & tolerance at the minimum, you can now quickly recolor the new blue & green parts, which gives step 6.

With that i can have both designs i wanted (7).
You can also add some texture without loosing any shading with that technique, that's what i did at the end, adding some chainmail texture to his torso.

When you're used to it it will take less than a minute, it's safe since you don't draw directly on the sprite, it respect the lines and there is a lot of other usefull aplications.
