I honestly believe you should get rid of the sword altogether.
Maybe use it for a hyper? Perhaps as a special intro? It doesn't
seem to fit the character, as of right now.

jus a mere suggestion though but have you thought of teaming up with the guy that made that hi res vergil. i think with what you are trying to do mixed in with his your dream of having Dante in mugen will be achieved a lot quicker. i just think itw worth considering and thinking about

iirc,Azcal had permission and wanted to make his own version of Vergil,i don't know if the original creator of Vergil would be interested on helping alexlexus in the spriting department of Dante

His name is bugya. You can find him over at the mugenguild. He is also making a DMC3 dante the same style as his virgil and im highly anticipating it. I offered my help but i think he likes to work solo on the 2.

however I do think you should use the sword for a super
