Removing the background from portraits (Photoshop)
« on: September 13, 2007, 10:46:28 PM »
First off, make sure your image is converted to .PCX and also 256 colors. There are numerous tutorials for this.

Next, open up the color table in photoshop.

This is what the color table looks like when open. The box in the bottom right corner contains color 0, the color which appears transparent in mugen.

At this point you want to click on the bottom rightmost box and copy the code for the color. Trust me, you'll need it.

Now, change that color to a different shade, one that doesn't clash with any other colors on the portrait. The codes for the two most frequently used are ff00ff (neon pink) and 00ff00 (neon green) If the background is initially pink, you should set color 0 to green, and vice versa.

Now your picture should have green "holes" in it. Paste the color code that i told you to copy as your selected color and use the paint bucket to fill in the neon green holes. You'll probably need to use the zoom tool.

After the image is completely filled in, change the background color to the your new color 0 and save.

Open Fighter Factory and change out the portrait. (Again, I'm assuming you guys know this part.)

And there you have it.

there are lots of ways, this is how to do it with Phototshop. It's not very hard, i just broke it into steps. This way tend to produce cleaner images.  (:|

lol well i know a better way( no offense) in ps
just convert the pic to rbg mode, then use the magic want to remove the old bg. Then go to image > mode > indexed color 256.

then copy the image, make a new file and paste it, then do the same step. and save as pcx. but it has to be the same bg color as the other sprites for the character

That's fine, but large portraits aren't supposed to share the pallete with characters, and the whole magic wand thing causes quality loss in many situations.  8=|

Anyways, this process works pretty similar in Paintshop, but color 0 is in the top left corner, not the bottom right

this is not how to remove the background from a picture just how to get the color 0 to be transparent. plus there are alot easier ways and it was already transparent at the beginning

same thing in this case.

If anyone else wants to comment on how there is an easier way, go make your own tutorial. I learned this way from MI a while back and i posted it with hopes of helping out the confused people in the help section.
