Yeah, "Break Man" was Megaman 3, and I've discovered something about him you might find interesting.

Protoman's Sprite block within the game' source code reveals some unused sprites of Protoman transforming into Break Man. One of these sprites was used in the actual game. Ever wonder why in Gemini Man's level when he comes out, his scarf is not flapping? It's not because graphically it couldn't be done, it's because that sprite of him standing is part of the Break Man transformation sequence. That having been said, Proto Man is indeed Break Man. But the question remains, why hide who he is, when is seems obvious?

Well, anyone who's played Mega Man 3 knows that Break Man is impervious to Robot Master Weapons and has bigger pellet shots than Proto Man. So it would seem that the "Break Man Mode" is more than just a disguise, but a powered up form as well.

Protoman was built before Megaman, which is why he has an unstable power core in the first place, plus the need for a shield. Due to his unstability, he ran off and was later found by Dr. Wily, who replaced his original faulty core with a nuclear one, temporarly fixing the problem. ProtoMan, out of graditude, decided to help Dr. Wily untill he discovered that A) Dr. Wily's true intensions are vile and B) Mega Man was his brother, which is why he saved him at the end of 3 and turned against Wily from then on. However, he never returned to the Light family because he still resents Dr. Light leaving him incomplete.

I know it says Megaman #1 fan, but I've been there since day 1 1987, so I know my stuff well.

Dont forget that Dr Willy was able to use protoman while working on him. He based the Sniper Joe line off of protoman's designs, while helping him out.

Protoman was based off Sniper Joe. The Sniper Joe's were created before Protoman by both Wily and Light.

Sniper Joe was based on Protoman after Wily fixed his power core.
