Update on the Internet Censorship bill
« on: January 13, 2012, 07:31:36 PM »
I know, I know guys, this topic's getting hot and heavy here, there's no other place to chat about this and it must be said. On January 18th, there is going to be an all-out strike on the Internet. Websites across the Internet are going dark in protest of the Internet censorship bills in Congress, SOPA and PIPA.

Some of the biggest sites in the world are participating: Reddit, Mozilla. And some others may join (e.g. a leading Micro Blogging platform and a popular collaboratively-written encyclopedia), but they need a nudge. If we can get them to join this will be EPIC. Click the link on below:

Fight for the Future!

On January 24, 2012, Congress will vote to pass Internet censorship in the Senate, even though the vast majority of Americans are opposed. We need to kill the bill - PIPA in the Senate and SOPA in the House - to protect our rights to free speech, privacy, and prosperity. We need Internet companies to follow Reddit's lead and stand up for the web, as we Internet users are doing every day.

Excuse me, but

Why will doing exactly what they want to do stop them from passing the bill?

Because then the support of the anti-SOPA movement will increase. If people lose major sites (imagine the outrage if Facebook went down for a full day) the public opinion could go from "Well, I'm not into politics or technology all that much...whatever..." to "SOPA must die!" in just one successful day.

Ah, that makes sense. So the idea is to give the public a taste of what kind of hell it would actually be to live in a SOPA-World.

This is why the American system of government is a failure. We elect people that are supposed to have our interests in mind, but they rarely do. Acts like this and NDAA prove that country clearly has no intention of being there for its people, instead wanting the people to be there for them.

why does this remind me of Metal Gear?
Has any represtatives from any state said anything to Congress about this bill? Someone has had to say something by now?

I'm not American but I do support the anti-SOPA group. SOPA makes me more concerned about Internet being destroyed. The effect would be if SOPA would destroy the environent of this world including jobs, education, society, research, and everything that we have in this world.

I have some questions about SOPA:
Who owns the internet (according to the hacking group, Anonymous)? What made companies support SOPA? What's the reason for SOPA to be passed? Does SOPA not care about education?

I'm not trying to sound like I'm support SOPA, but I wonder why. If we are fighting against SOPA, we are not just doing for us, but we are doing this for the world.

SOPA Targets Pirating of Movies,Games, Music, and Etc..

The Whole point of SOPA Is to shut and take down anyone who Pirates or commits Copyrights infringement..even including using your favorite music say in a tribute video or amv... You get fined or face jail time(up to 5 years)..even small things like that they will take serious action upon you.

Also Including blacklisting and shutting down any site that violates that law.. and the webmaster and anyone involved also facing criminal charges. This bill is too extreme and pointless because they are fighting a losing battle and now plan to nuke the internet at the expense of those who had nothing to do with it to begin with.

Couldn't drawings of characters also fall into this as well? If it's true then the Mugen community as a whole could be affected on a major scale. Heck  if it is true, then even trying to make a character from scratch from a movie or comic or game could also get you thrown into jail or at least a fine.

pretty much. But I doubt it would really affect Mugen since no one is really robbing Capcom or those other companies of money. If anything, they see it as fan fiction or something to that degree.

That I dont know. I would think fan art would be fine. I think it just boils down to if a big corporation stands to lose money  somehow (understandable in some cases, ridiculous in others), then it will be censored. Otherwise, it shouldnt be a big deal.

So for the sake of argument, a fan made poster for a Nintendo vs Capcom idea is less likely to get them up in a fuss than an actual fan game of Nintendo vs Capcom

"So fan fiction is safe but fan art isn't?"
Why so? If you used character made by someone else... You should burn in hell, 'coz you stealing potential profit(like if they ever made that themselves)! Or if your character is similar to other character made by someone famous. For example unfamous Tanya Grotter case where J. K. Rowling successfully sued Dmitri Yemets for copying... I fear that any ever made character will suffer Voldemort's fate - will be the ones who's names couldn't be spoken...
I just feel one major flaw behind all copyright thing. More companies produces - more things you can't do, more things you can't use without permission and/or money, etc. That way is just wrong...

copy right infringment is the use or likeness of a character without the companys consent, the only way around it I can think is unless its a worded fan fiction. But even then it might come down to wether the character sounds like their character. Character fan art would also fall into this as well. Since the characters likeness is used, the company can go after the person who made the art. Nothing seems to be safe with this stupid thing. Unless you come up with a character or story thats all your own, any company can go after anyone for copy infringment.
So for the sake of argument, a fan made poster for a Nintendo vs Capcom idea is less likely to get them up in a fuss than an actual fan game of Nintendo vs Capcom
If they find reason to, they can press charges againt who ever posted or made the poster.
